Fred, In regard to your question about calcification, the fact that your wife's pancreas has shown " slow " calcification is a good sign. While it does mean that calcification has increased since the films several years ago, it sounds as though it's been slow in developing. In my personal experience, my calcification increased very rapidly, I went from original diagnosis of CP to 90% calcification and pancreas burnout in less than 18 months, which is very rapid and unusual. It sounds as though your wife's progression has been very slow. Good luck with the dietician. I've found that some are very knowledgeable, while others don't have a clue about what's best for a person with CP. As far as pancreatitis diets go, I would like to suggest that you look here on our site in the " Files " section. If you check there and click on " Nutrition " , it will take you to a Pancreatitis Diet Tips sheet that I developed a few years ago that has several good suggestions and tips for daily dieting with chronic pancreatitis. The whole idea here is to adopt a diet that is low in fat and protein, and generous in carbohydrates. Once the pancreas has become inefficient, it has difficulty digesting fats and proteins. The use of pancreatic enzymes and a proper low fat diet will help greatly to reduce the pain caused by the digestive process. I do hope that her physician has prescribed pancreatic enzymes for her to take. If not, I suggest that you speak to the GI and ask for them. They make a tremendous difference for most people. Sometimes it's necessary to try a few different types before the most appropriate brand of pancreatic enzyme is found. Most of us take them. It is recommended that the patient take a minimum of 30,000 units of lipase to be most effective. If you have any other questions that I can help you with, please post again. I have a tremdous amount of research material on chronic pancreatitis, symptoms, conditions, complications, enzymes, antioxidants, etc., and I'd be happy to share whatever I have with you or anyone else that's interested.
