It sounds to me like he had a very typical setback.... at a time when we

commonly see that. It's temporary.... does not mean you're doing anything wrong.

It's like a new round of die-off.... or just a " bump " in the road. VERY common

and right on schedule.

It's not a bad thing to go back and re-do a day of intro... so that's fine. I

personally think I would avoid going back to peanut butter. I think a different

nut butter choice is a good idea for a while. Almonds are high in

salicylates.... that could be why they cause him a problem.... and peanut

butter, well.... it's actually a legume. Lately, we've been discouraging it's

use for anyone in the beginning months. I know it's listed in the book as legal

to use right away, but we just see too many of the kids having difficulties, and

doing better after taking peanut butter out.

Yes, you have the right idea with the pecans... you do have to add oil to make

it into a " butter " consistency.... but, you really won't get a super smooth

consistency with a food processer. It does turn out pretty grainy. I think I've

heard of people using a coffee grinder (the blade type).... one that is

dedicated to use with nuts, or maybe spices and things like that, but not used

for coffee. I haven't personally done it that way, though.

You could look for hazelnut or macadamia butter.... commercially available, but

might be hard to find. I'd look for Maranatha brand at a health food store... or

maybe online.

Expect a few more setbacks in the future... they seem to come every so often,

but are most often temporary.

Nut Butter

My son, Jack, has been doing SCD for almost 4 months now. He did

very well for about a month, and then started settling back into pre-

SCD behaviors after that, so last week we began with the intro diet

again. He is eating ground beef, boiled or grilled chicken, eggs,

butternut and acorn squash, green beans (I can't find fresh french

cut), cooked apples, and bananas right now. He also drinks diluted

grape jucie, apple cider and OJ. I would like to offer a nut butter

to him, but am apprensive because so many children seem to have

problems with them. I don't think Jack has a problem with peanut or

almond butter, because his stools have been good when I used those

in the past. But then, his behavior wasn't so good (stemming

through the roof). I want to do this right, so I'm thinking of

trying a different nut to make butter. I bought a few pounds of

pecans, but am unsure as to the processing. Will a regular food

processor with a little oil, say, safflower oil, do the trick? It

doesn't seem that a processor would make the butter creamy enough -

it seems like it would be on the crunchy side and therefore, less

easy to digest. Please help.
