Hey everyone, my name is Jackie Record, I'm a mom of a 2 year old and a 5 month

old both boys. My 5 month old Logan is getting a doc band through Cranial Tech

in Phoenix, AZ next week and I'm a little sad, scared and looking for any help

that you guys could have to offer. I'm new to message boards and def new to the

whole helmet idea. If any of you had advice for me, anything you think is

important to know starting out, and where and how to get them decorated so cute!

Thanks so much for your support I look forward to hearing from you guys!

Sincerely,

Jackie Record

Hi Jackie -

Welcome to the group. You'll find lots of support here -- as well as a great

place to bring questions and such. My son is in his second DOC Band and I have

learned so much about plagio and the whole banding process the experience of the

other parents here. It is especially overwhelming at the beginning, but it does

get easier -- if you're like most of us, there is lots of relief that comes with

actually getting that band on finally. Most of us spent lots of time prior to

the band worrying about repositioning and all things associated with plagio (and

tort). So it may bring an unexpected sigh of relief to finally be able to rest a

bit knowing the band is on and treatment is finally in progress. And so many of

the babies - particularly at the age of your son - respond so quickly in those

first weeks. My son was banded at 5 1/2 months and within 3 days, my husband

noticed a significant difference. I didn't believe him at first but it actually

did change a lot that first week and that was exciting! It was a momentum boost

for me to really feel good about the treatment so early on instead of dreading

it. My son was in his first band for 7 weeks and I confess I did get weary

towards the end...mainly with all the strange looks we got when we were out and

about. We ended up doing a second band, which I REALLY dreaded...and then once

he got band #2, all that dread vanished and I was just relieved we decided to

keep going. Many had recommended putting the child's name on the front of the

band and we did that this time around. I never thought that would make a big

difference, but people are definitely friendlier to him....that seems to give

people a starting place to say something and engage him in " conversation " . And

that puts me at ease, too. So, I'd definitely recommend that. As far as other

advice...the one thing I didn't do early on with Cranial Tech was ask some

specific questions about where we can expect progress and change (ie. point to

your greatest areas of concern and ask specifically " Can I expect this to

improve/change? " ) I didn't really have specific questions at the beginning -

they kind of developed along the way as we learned more. But that was one thing

that I think really would have helped to know starting out. Of course, they

don't always know where you'll get the most improvement, but it's a good

conversation to have, I think. Also, to ask - given your son's starting point -

what the end goal is. What will his head look like at the end of treatment

assuming his numbers get into the normal range. (ie. will one side still be more

full...questions along those lines.)

Hope that is helpful. It is overwhelming to start the process, but that feeling

won't last long. Lots of babies adjust without any trouble or issues...they are

so adaptable. Much more of an adjustment for moms and dads! Good luck and keep

us posted on your progress.

Hi - my baby was in a starband from 5.5 mo to 14 months and it was the best - she is completely within normal range - went from 14mm diag diff to 2 mm (0-5 is normal)

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi Jackie,

welcome to the group. You're banding at a great time, and you'll probably see

improvement very quickly. Also CT has a very good reputation, so I think things

will go smoothly for you. My daughter got a starband at the same age and she

adjusted very well. It doesn't take long to just become part of your routine.

Keep us posted on your progress.
