Guest guest
Hello Cecilia, At my hospital, even the TP for CP is generally done without removal of the duodenum etc. Even the spleen is spared whenever possible. My surgeon said similar things to yours, ie. the less medication (or any other drugs) you're on beforehand, the better the chance of success in terms of pain relief. I suppose this is because you won't miss narcotics afterwards. I guess it must depend on whether the patient needs them only for pain or has developed some sort of additional physical or psychological dependence as well. Here, they generally try to wean you off narcotics before the operations. Liverpool doesn't currently do the ICT however, but my surgeon said I was so near to diabetes that I wouldn't have enough islet cells to succeed anyway. I'm still sorry it isn't done. It may come soon. It's been done at Leicester, I believe. Anyway, the Whipple won't leave you diabetic, Cecilia. As Chrissy says, I'd check out the different versions of the operation first. I wish you the very best of luck with whatever option you may choose to go for. I'm sorry you're facing this just as you go to your new job. Maybe you haven't made any final decisions yet? With good wishes, Fliss (UK)
