Hi!

Thanks for the good advice about stopping the supplement trial. We did

and he is better already. Great that the manic laughter is gone and to

be able to speak to him again and not expect an long arguement back! We

are now tring just one new supplement. I would like to hear more about

the calcium bothering the kids. I would also like to know how to make

sure they get the calcium they need.

My other concern is how to decide whether or not a food bothers enough

to exclude it from the diet? I feel like there are conflicting messages

on the sites regarding this. Should I exclude a food only if D occurs?

Or should I look closely for behavioural changes? For myself I wonder

if I should exclude it if I become itchy or gassy?

I wanted to report that my daughter (18 months) has had a week now of

wonderfully formed poops! We are thrilled. She never had one formed

prior to SCD. All were mushy and with much undigested food. We have to

mash or prechew all her food for her.

Thanks!

On the calcium, go read up over at the Vitamin K site:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VitaminK/

You'll have to join first, then go read the files. And, especially,

Tamaro's initial article on the subject... which can also be found here:

http://gutresearch.com/v1.html

What she's been finding out most recently, is that the kids don't just need

Vitamin K to properly absorb and utilize calcium.... they absolutely must have

enough A & D as well. The three work synergistically to lay calcium where it

belongs, in the bones and teeth.... and not floating around unmanaged in the

brain (and elsewhere) causing problems. So... if those vitamins are being

supplemented, you can bring calcium in safely. I won't go on any more about all

that... you can go read over there.

I think that at this early stage (and at two months in, you ARE all in the early

stages yet), any symptom you see that you feel is negative.... whether it's

itchy skin, behavioral changes or intestinal distress of any kind.... and you

feel it's attributable to a certain food... then just hold off on that food for

now. That doesn't mean you'll never be able to use that food.... just that the

gut needs a chance to heal more first.
