Guest guest
HI guys, As we know many of our ASD kids have intestinal disease of some kind. Even if it has not been comfirmed by a GI specialist, Elaine truly felt that this was true. In active malabsorption syndromes and people with a active intestinal vicious cycle, ALL nutrients my potentially be affected. One of the advantages of being diagnosed with this as a child is that the body is so resilient. The Celiac Sprue Association says that within Six to twelve months the intestines can completely heal with Within about two years, Elaine says that the gut disbiosis can be resolved. But this does assume " fanatical adherence " and sticking to SCD 100% by the guidelines in her BTVC book. Any set backs caused by infractions have to be accounted for. Here is a List of common deficiencies that people with ASD, malabsorption and CD have. I have included a list of natural food sources that are HIGH in that category, that can fix this type of nutritional imbalances as the gut heals. Taking in mind that you first eat easy to digest foods and then add the ones that are harder to digest for later. Please go to food preparation to see stages to get ideas on what foods are easier to digest. This can aid faster healing: http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html<http://www.pecanbread.com/foodprep.html>\ : Carbohydrate Deficiency: Fruit, vegetables, SCD dairy products, SCD allowed Dried beans and other tolerated legumes, peas, lentils. Plus most don't realize that these foods offer carbohydrate too: meat, SCD dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Fat: Fish Oils, Coconut Oils, Walnut Oils, Safflower Oils, Sunflower oil, organic butter, organic ghee, spectrum shortening, olives, nuts, and seeds. Fat Soluble Vitamins (D, E, A and K): Vitamin A: SCD dairy, eggs, liver, dark green and deep orange, and yellow vegetables and fruit (spinach, carrots, squash, cantaloupe, apricots, Vitamin D: SCD dairy, Exposure to the sun, organic organ meats (liver is wonderful), egg yolks, fatty fish such as salmon and sardines (being mindful of mercury/ the smaller the fish the better). Vitamin E: Vegetable and other oils (no soy or flax please), organic butter, nuts (nut flours), and seeds. Vitamin K (INCLUDING NATURAL k2): Dark green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, and kale are good sources. SCD dairy and eggs contain some. The healthy intestine makes vitamin K by the presence of good bacteria ALL ON ITS OWN. CALCIUM: Scd diary, Almonds, SCD dried legumes, dark green and leafy vegetables, peas, and lentils. Magnesium: SCD dry beans, almonds, hazelnuts, dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are wonderful sources. Zinc: MEAT, organ meats like organic liver, seafood are the best sources. While SCD allowed legumes are also moderately high. Iron: meat, poultry, seafood, and organic organ meats, nuts, seeds, and dark green, leafy vegetables. ALWAYS serve with a food high in vitamin C to improve absorption: citrus fruits, berries, dark green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage). Folate/Folic Acid and B6: Vegetables and fruits, such as dark green, leafy vegetables, oranges, strawberries, and SCD legumes. Vitamin B12 (only occurs when the ileum is involved/often caused by gut disbiosis, since only a god gut flora makes it): meat, poultry, seafood, organ meats, eggs, and SCD dairy. This is why some benefit from B12 shots or B12 nasal sprays, for a period of time. Potassium, Sodium, Chloride (Electrolytes): fruits, and vegetables, such as bananas, apricots, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, kiwi, tomatoes as well as SCD dairy, fresh meat, poultry, seafood's and table salt. Without careful food selections and imbalances can occur in the best of us. Children or people who are healing from intestinal disease and malabsorption need to be extra careful about getting a balanced SCDiet. It is absolutely essential that your child consume enough calories and enough nutrients to promote normal development and growth---as well as catch up growth for some. Supplementation is an aid not a replacement of good diet. I feel that many of us are getting into this very expensive trap of thinking that supplementation can fix this...yet even Elaine knew that it does not work that well. This is one reason to why her book doesn't suggest that we buys tons of them! Plus, it is known that many supplemental vitamins and minerals just do not absorb too well in people with an injured gut. Often just making expensive urine. Or worse. Some vitamins can become hazardous to your health if taken in too high amounts. Creating toxic overload because of taking too much, with the intentions of " fixing " the problem. This is easy to do if a person isn't very careful. So I have learned that if it is possible, we need to fix it with good food choices and a balanced diet. Elaine knew that SCD can offer a balanced diet, but we do have a part in this. Having picky eaters does complicate matters. So this means that we need to be extra diligent in getting our kids to eat more choices. Takes work, possibly ABA type behavior techniques. Where the child can only get their food of choice as an award for eating things less desirable. For example, A bite of the desired food only if he eats a bite of something that is not desired. Making it fun and not a punishment. I know that this is not easy. I am a mom here to trying to fight the battle OF THE PICKY EATER. But we truly need to realize that we have the power as parents to over come some of these problems. I hope that this helps some, Antoinette, and three kids/ List of family problems (CD, colitis, gut disbioisis, add, adhd, autism and more) SCD 2/
