Guest guest
Hi, my 7 month old son has mild plagio and is just over one week in his helmet. Our insurance company initially pointed us in the direction of the Hanger helmet, and as it turns out they denied coverage on it. At this point though, he was already fitted for the helmet because we didn't want to waste much time getting it started. (Wanted to get on with the process in order to be done with it as soon as possible.) Anyways, maybe I'm being completely paranoid, but is it possible that his head could look worse before it looks better? My worry level is up to begin with because I'm seeing some skin sensitivity and just in general am worried he won't be able to tolerate/adjust to this process. I'm curious to hear of experiences of anyone who has used this type of helmet before. On another note, I was advised to put moleskin on some areas inside the helmet to help relieve some of the skin sensitivity. My son's head has been soaking wet every time I take it off him, and it doesn't help that it's been super hot here. How do you all handle the heat/possible heat rashes? Thanks! Guest guest
We are two months into our Hanger helmet. I think the adjustment was harder on me than on my son, who got his helmet at 6 months old. He did just fine other than a few red spots and I was told his head would sweat for the first week or two and then his body would adjust to it and he no longer gets a sweaty head. As far as the red spots, the orthotist had to do a little trimmimg on the first few visits. But over all, has adjusted very well and it hasnt affected him sleeping what so ever. > > Hi, my 7 month old son has mild plagio and is just over one week in his helmet. Guest guest
We used a Hanger. It took a lot of fitting to get it right. Did Hanger scan? If you are thinking it looks worse, I would ask for another scan. You can compare the 2 to see where the changes are. Also, sweating is very normal. Just make sure you clean it with 91% alcohol to keep down the stink and dress you kids lightly. Keep 'em indoors with the air on as much as possible in the summer heat! Even a fan in their room at night is good. If you see redness that does not go away after the 1 hour break do NOT put the band back on. It can cause skin breakdown which would furthur delay the treatment. As far as moleskin, we did not use that. I am not sure what it would be for. If the skin is red I would think that it would be from the pressure and more thickness would add to that pressure. If it is from the band rubbing then I would think that the band is too big. A band should have holding points and empty spots where the flatness is. A bit of shifting is ok but I don;t think there should be enough to cause a rub burn. HTH! Guest guest
We aren't using hanger but in response to the sweating, my daughgter has the same problem. I dress her in a shirt or onesie and never put socks on her. The first two days she basically played around the house in her diaper. She also slept in short sleeves and shorts for the first week and just now has started sleeping in pants and a short sleeve. It's very hot here (Dallas, TX) and we have really turned down our AC. She seems cooler, but we are cold! And if I run errands, then I definitely just stick her in a onesie. That's when she sweats the most! With every diaper change we dry her hair and band and so far no heat rash or anything. I took her swimming the other day and let the band dry out too. I don't know how often they start stinking, but ours did fast, which maybe it was all the sweating?? Hope that may have helped. > > Hi, my 7 month old son has mild plagio and is just over one week in his helmet. I live in Arizona and my daughter only really sweats at night. We dress her in onesies ,no socks and jammies at night but no blankets. I was told that one of the causes of skin break down was over tightening of the band. Every time you change his diaper wipe down his head, but do not use anything but water.Anything else can clog the inside of the helmet and cause the sweating to get worse. And remember to clean the inside of the band with alcohol.
Guest guest
Thank you all for your advice and comments! They have been helpful, especially in figuring out what is just part of the adjustment to the helmet and for easing my mind a bit about using the Hanger helmet. My son did develop a crazy heat rash and additional rash. So it's been a bit of a nightmare, but he's settling down and I think we're through the worst of the adjustment. I'm a little more knowledgeable about what to do and how to manage things now too. Thanks in large part to this group! > > > We used a Hanger.? It took a lot of fitting to get it right.? Guest guest
We went for our appointment a few days ago. I really dont understand what all the measurements mean exactly, but I do know that has gone from 102% down to 94% in two months, and his head is looking great. So I have to say that we are very happy so far with or Hanger helmet. Jessie mom to -8 months > > > > Hi, my 7 month old son has mild plagio and is just over one week in his helmet.
