Too late for helmet?

Hi Everyone,

I am so glad I found this group! Finally I can talk to people with problems

similar to mine, in a tongue easy to understand.

My son was diagnosed with sever brachy @ the age of 5 months. My husband and I

were reluctant to have him wear a helmet, so we decided to wait and see if

extensive repositioning will work... Regrets...

Later on extensive international travel and job related relocation delayed the

treatment.

Finally, @ 11 months of age we my son was seen by a plastic surgeon. It took two

more months for " the good doctor " to send us to Hanger.

Tomorrow is my son's first fitting of the helmet, @ the age of 13 months. I was

told by the orthotist not to expect any drastic results, even none, or just a

matter of mm.

Does anyone of you started the treatment @ similar age and with what results?

Despite the orthotist comment I have hope. Should I??

I say many comments that Starband and Docband are the best. anyone having

experience with Hanger? I would change to Starband if that will increase the

chances of my baby having beautiful round head, even if it costs a lot... I

don't think our Insurance will cover, since the treatment was initiated after

their age limit.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome-

It's not too late. My son wore 2 DOCBands from 17-24 months and got great

improvement. His before and after photos are in our Older Plagio Kids folder

under Jake W. I think it's good to have hope, but still keep realistic

expectations.

Do you know the plagio/band experience of the ortho you will be working with?

Hanger bands can be really hit or miss, so it's important to know you're working

with a skilled ortho. My concern from your post is that he's not confident that

you'll get results. And yes, there's always a chance that you won't since growth

is key to achieving change in the head shape, and some babies grow slower than

others. But for me personally, I wanted the ortho I was working with to have

some confidence to at least get me through the treatment emotionally. I saw a

STARBand ortho and they were okay, but when I went to CT, they made me feel much

more confident that we might get good results, so I just had to go with them. I

just don't think I could have handled the negativity at every adjustment, you

know? Not that that's what you'll get, but it's just something to think about.

You want to work with someone who is devoted to getting every ounce of

correction out of that band as possible, regardless of the age of your child. So

if you feel like you'll get that from the Hanger ortho, great. If not, maybe it

would be worth checking out the STARBand ortho, at least for comparison

purposes.

Good luck! Please keep us posted!
