Katy How about this? http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/674267/2/istockphoto_674267-ripe-banana.jpgAnd , I would guess that if the banana is mushy, it's plenty ripe, even if it's still a little green along with the spots. The point of it being ripe is so that the starches are broken down, and as that happens, the banana gets less firm, so I would go by that. I'm sure the bananas you've been eating are fine.
