I am new here and am desperately seeking advice/support. I have an

underbite, so they are moving my bottom jaw back and top jaw forward.

They say the surgery will last 4 hours and I will stay in the

hospital

for 2 nights. Has anyone had this procedure? I am having a lot of

anxiety because I don't know what to expect. My doctor said I will

be

eating mashed potatoes and yogurt? Will it be more liquid? Any

advice

will be much appreciated.

Hi ,

Others are more qualified to answer your questions, but I know they

will, so stick around. Lots of good info here and people who have had

or will have similar surgeries to yours.

Welcome!

jen -

i'm having my upper advanced in a little under four hours. i'll let

you know how it goes! having read this board, though, i expect it to

be pretty uncomfortable but not devistating. and there's a lot of

good soft, blended food cookbooks out there. my fiance bought one

called " so what if you can't chew - eat hearty. " i think another good

site to look at is www.8weekswired.com

the anxiety is normal - i think we all have it. good luck!

First of all welcome to the group. I think you'll find a lot of

reassurance on this site. I know I did! Well for one thing you have a

lot of June surgery buddies to keep you company while you recover post-

op. I just had surgery 3 days ago on June 6th and I already feel miles

better than I did right after surgery. I had an upper leforte, palet

was expanded and top jaw was dissected into three sections. I had two

upper bicuspids removed and a genioplasty to my lower chin. My surgery

lasted about 5 and half hours I think. I was in the hospital only for

one night and was home within 24 hours of my surgery. I can tell you

for a fact that you will not remember much of the surgery i.e. you get

into the OR room, they put the first IV into you and then you're out

like a light. The next thing you remember is when you wake up in the

recovering unit. By then I was just so happy that it was all over with!

If you're scared make sure you tell the doctors and nurses. I have a

needle phobia and told everyone about it and they were really good

about being soothing and reassuring.

(sweetpearl@) on this site is having surgery on June 14th and her

birthday is June 15th, the day of your surgery so she'll be the perfect

surgery buddy. We're all here for you so don't hesitate to post any

questions or vent out any fears you might have. The important thing is

to stay focused on the end goal and that's getting your bite fixed!

Hey Jen,

I also had an underbite and I had upper jaw advancement 3 days ago to

correct it. The surgery went as planned and I am at home recovering.

I'm on a liquid diet right now but it honestly isn't that bad. I

haven't experienced much pain and the numbness isn't really bothering

meeither, so I'd say the discomfort is a small price to pay for what i

hope is a great improvement in my bite functioning.

Jae,

Thanks for the comforting advice. Joining this group and reading everyone's

comments has helped ease my mind tremendously! Only 6 days to go...getting

kinda scary.

Yes. I will be the perfect surgery buddy. Well maybe not, I wont be

around to calm your fears right before you go in because I will

already be at the hospital!! But we will definitely be able to

relate after the 15th! I am having the opposite of you, upper and

lower but lower is going foward. As far as the liquids, my surgeon

said 2 weeks until I can start on a soft, no-chew diet. It sounds

like the first week you cant have anything with any consistancy to

it, so only liquids. But I doubt we will feel up to eating much

anyways. Feel free to ask any questions or just get things off your

mind. This site is really really helpful and I will be going

through the surgery only a couple of hours (and probably quite a few

miles) away. Keep in touch!

Where are you at? I'm in Utah. I'm so glad to know someone will be going

through the same thing at the same time. Then we will have each other to

Hi. I am having upper moved up, lower moved foward, and genio on

the 14th. If I am doing good enough, I should be released sometime

on the 15th.

Katharina,

I think this group will be a huge help for you. I know it has been for me. I

only have three days until my surgery and I pretty much always feel like I'm

going to throw up. It helps a lot to hear exactly what people feel like after

the surgery and that you WILL get through it. I figured out that it won't be as

bad as my imagination made it out to be. I have an underbite, so they are

moving my bottom jaw back and top jaw forward. The surgery is supposed to last

4 hours and I have to stay in the hospital for 2 nights. I am 20... Hope this

helps.
