How many protein shakes do you do each day? Do you get some of the good fats in your diet? Sheri In sunny Florida
Guest guest
Shelly, The two things that come to mind are a lack of protein and an underactive thyroid. Ask your doctor to do the next test up for the thyroid. It is more accurate. It may or may not stop on its own, and it may or may not grow back on its own. My hair used to be so thick I could not get a comb thru it. After I had my kids, it got really thin, and thinner yet with each successive surgery. It came out in handfuls after RNY, but stopped after 3 months or so. Came back fairly good, but not as good as pre-op -- which wasn't all that good to begin with, LOL. The thyroid panel (tests) you want includes: TSH, T4-total, CFT4 (also called FTI), T3-total, and T3-uptake. The lab I go to (Quest Diagnostic) calls this a " Hyperthyroid Panel II " (that's two as in Roman numeral two, not eleven). As long as your doc writes scrip for it, your insurance should cover it. You can always check with them in advance. I have taken Synthroid since my mid-20's, and haven't needed to change the dose since WLS. If I quit taking it, tho, I get silver-dollar sized bald spots and have to go get cortisone shots in my scalp (ouchy-ouch!) to get it growing again. After 4-5 tries at giving it up, I have just resigned myself to Synthroid for life. Had a LOT of trouble with my nails after RNY, though, and apparently not thyroid related. Been taking 2400mcg biotin for nearly 2 years, and nails have FINALLY started to not break off and split like onion skin all the time. They are actually about a half inch beyond the quick now, which I'd never expected to see again, they were SO bad. Biotin helps hair growth also. (I even use a biotin shampoo). You might try supplementing while you're investigating other causes. I know of no bad side effects and this dose seems not to be a problem (2400 mcg is only 240 mg).
