I didn't have the option of lap either. Being only 4'11 " and before surgery

weighing 309 lbs (my heaviest recorded weight) lap wasn't an option. I had

also found in my researching that some surgeons prefer the open method because

they are able to make the stem of the Y longer, making it easier for digestion.

Guess that is a personal opinion of the surgeon. I've known several people

having it both ways and have all had great success. I didn't have any staples

though so I was lucky and didn't have to experience that....lol.

Amy,

Lap is not always an option. Some doctors won't do it at all for whatever

reason. But if your middle is too big the instruments are too short. For me it

is a little of both because my doctor feels he gets more control when he has

that one hand inside. If I could have it lap you better believe that I would.

Find out what kind of closure your doctor does, my doctor doesn't not

use external stapes or sutures.

He puts the big strong sutures into the muscle and then uses a clear

filament under the skin to draw the skin together and then they cover

the whole incision with a large clear adhesive type bandage. When the

bandage begins to come off you just take it off in the shower 2 - 3

weeks, the incision isn't exposed to the air while it is healing and a

lot less chance of infections.

And one thing to keep in mind. No matter whether you are going in for a lap or

in for a hand assisted lap like I am. There is always the possibility that they

will not be able to do it the way they wanted and will have to cut you open.

That is a risk that every patient runs. The thought of being cut open scares me

to death, but I have to not think about that. Just a thought.

And man, we have all been very chatty today. I love it. Keep em coming.
