Haven't fallen off the wagon, but this I do know: get back on the wagon

as quickly as possible. I'd do a couple days of intro to reset things,

and then keep on working.

Don't kick yourself for having slipped up: those bad bugs in your gut

want their preferred food, and they'll twist your brain into a knot (I

was about to say, pretzel, but pretzels are SCD-illegal!) in order to get

it!

Hi SCDlady,

Don't beat yourself up about it. You're human, and you made a mistake, and the

diet is a lifestyle change, so it can be difficult.

I fell off hard core over Christmas, and I'm pretty sure that's what landed me

in the hospital with a huge flare (I have Crohn's). I'll be honest, even though

I fell on Christmas, I tried to get back on, but I was back and forth until I

landed in the hospital. That was my wake up call, and honestly, I personally

needed to see the effects of what going off the diet could do, because I needed

justification to myself to be on the diet.

Being back in the hospital after not even a year of diagnosis and having my

doctor mention the possibility of surgery was enough for me to stick with it

fanatically. My inflammation levels are again getting really high and I'm in a

flare, but *knock on wood* I think the diet is what is helping me stay out of

the hospital. And now that I have a few good months of SCD under my belt, it is

definitely easier to stick with. I keep thinking about how each month passes I'm

closer to maybe being able to try something off the diet. So for me, it's

basically fear of getting really sick again, and motivation of being able to eat

non SCD foods one day that keep me to it.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm so happy I found this diet, but I think it can

be extremely difficult to follow sometimes, especially if you love food, which I

do. I'm not saying you can't make delicious food, but sometimes I really just

want something not SCD legal and there are no good substitutes. You should be

proud of yourself for even taking the initiative to follow this diet. Many times

I've read on forums of people who have heard of it, but don't even want to think

about following it because they feel it's too restrictive.

Forgive yourself, and recommit. If you feel like you got sick because of the bad

food you ate, remember that when you consider cheating. I don't know what kind

of digestive problems you have, but try and remember that this diet should help

those issues and possibly get you off medication (if you're on any). Make a list

of the benefits of the diet and remember those when you feel like you may stray.

Or come on here and vent and we'll give you some encouragement.

Don't feel bad. I was extremely embarrassed to admit I cheated and was

considering not posting on the list anymore because of it, but I finally forgave

myself and moved on. I think you'll find that the more time you have invested in

the diet, the easier it will get to stick to it. It can still be difficult, but

maybe think about the end product- you can get closer to the finish line by

sticking to the diet, but if you get off it, you're starting back at the

beginning.

Good luck! You're human, forgive yourself and move on. We're here for you!

Take care,

Amber

Totally random side note but I'm in the DC metro area so if you're in town again

I would recommend eating at a mongolian BBQ place and have them cook your stuff

separately (they're very nice about it) or Whole Foods has a really good

selection or this one Burmese food restaurant that I can point out. Or heck, I

like to cook for people too! :D

As for adjusting your mindset...? I think that the best way to think about it

is just to learn from your mistake. You fell off the wagon. It happens.

Dwelling on it isn't going to help you heal any faster, it's just going to make

you feel worse. It's okay, it really is! We're human. No one is going to

think you're a horrible person for slipping. It happens. So now you know how

bad you feel if you eat illegals...use that as an incentive to be more careful

about staying strict. The important thing is to learn from your mistake and

move forward. Don't dwell on the negative. :D

Well, I actually now prefer eating SCD food more so than the other types of

food, which tastes bland.

I also got really sick, (not only my tummy...but a really bad summer flu :(. )

I've paid a high price -- Is still sick six days later.

It's weird -- off the diet, I find myself preferring the taste of SCD foods to

my old diet. The things I thought I was missing, I really wasn't at all. And I

don't feel bloated and icky after SCD meals. Maybe this slip up was a good thing

in the end, because I now know what I " craved " wasn't really something that I

should have missed.

Funnily enough, people around me are starting to convert to SCD-like diets. (My

younger sister told me yesterday, she's no longer eating starches, grains and

sugars.

The reason I stay on SCD is not mindset or willpower but fear of feeling like I

did before I started SCD. So your recent bout of feeling bad should help

motivate you to get started again.

I also noticed that people around me prefer SCD food.My teen daughter loves it,

and hubby has cut down on gluten products. Everyone says they feel much better

when they eat like me. My son had a friend visit us- she has diabetes, and it

was so easy for her to stay with us, because SCD food is good for her too- I

already cook sugar-free!

It's just a healthier way to be in the long run.

I do cook rice or potatoes as a side dish for my non-SCD family members, but

otherwise, they eat what I make.

I fell off the wagon after a few weeks on the diet. I went in the hospital and

was so sick (because I wasn't following SCD properly). I stayed off the diet for

2 months or until I came off Prednisone and started getting sick again. Got back

on Jan 2008 and got so much better that being sick isn't worth falling off

again.
