Hey, I was on the fence about undergoing this surgery two other

times - both times I passed. But, this time it feels so-o right to do

this - I have the best surgeon I could have ever hoped for. This time

I'm doing this for ME - not to get people (family) off my back. I'm

tired of having this stupid underbite; my function is now getting

worse - chewing and talking. Now that I've made up my mind, I'm very

impatient to get the whole thing started so I can get my surgery next

summer. These decisions are never easy; everyone wrestles with the

pro's and con's. Sure, I'm scared, but fear is okay; I'll get thru

this with the help of my surgeon, all the wonderful people on this

site, and my friends/family. It helps to get all the info you can

about the surgery; for me, I searched the web and I have read lots

and lots of back-posts of this site. I think I will be very ready

when the surgery comes. Good luck with your decision! ~~~~~ Diane---

Hi there.

I wanted to reply because I was very on the fence initially about my

surgery. I thought my orthodentist was just looking for more money. I

was sure that there must be some other way to correct my bite. My jaw

has been in rough shape for 14 years (actually since I got my braces

off the first time). My lower jaw is an back from my upper jaw. I

didn't realize it was so far because my first set of braces had only a

cosmetic result, and made my lower front teeth tip forward to account

for the inch of space.

I wanted to just get braces again. But, I also wanted my jaw to feel

better. I can't talk for more than a couple of hours without aching.

Smiling too much makes my jaw sore. Its all because in order to make

proper verbal sounds and smile, I have to slide my lower jaw forward.

I realize now that surgery is really the only way for me. I am scared,

nervous, hopeful, timid, and excited about my surgery. I hope some of

this has helped you out. This is a very personal decision. Good luck

on whatever you decide to do.

My reasons for surgery were as follows:

After wearing braces for 10 years between the ages of 7 to 17 my open

bite/over bite redeveloped. At age 26 I finally decided to go through

with the surgery (I am now age 27). Problems I encountered between the

ages of 17 and 26 when my bite worsened were as follows:

- problem biting into food e.g. there is no way I can bite into a

sandwhich without cutting it into small pieces first or gnawing at it

like a dog

- i tend to chew all my foods on the right hand side of my mouth and

use only my back teeth

- eating anything meaty is tiresome

- I developed headaches/migraines that got increasingly worse and that

could last any where between 10 minutes to 2 hours at a time. No pain

medicine helped to relieve this

- My smile was getting gummier by the minute

- My jaw was constantly grating and popping, sometimes locking

- I'm a teeth grinder when I sleep and when under particular stress,

this problem was getting worse

- the muscles and nerves on the side of my face and my chin were

constantly in tension because I was trying to compensate for my jaw

weakness

So there you go. After evaluating how much these problems had gotten

worse over the time span of 9 years I did a few calculations in my

head and figured that by the time I was 40 I would be going absolutely

bonkers with eating and migraines. No thank you!

SOLUTION - Surgery

WAS I SCARED - You bet'cha!

WAS THE SURGERY SCARY - Only the beginning, as in getting into the

hospital. The surgery itself was so much easier than I ever expected.
