Guest guest
My immune system kicks in if I have probiotics too often; sounds like yours does the same even though our symptoms are slightly different. My normal maintenance dose of L. Acidophilus (can’t eat dairy) is one capsule, taken with food, every 3 to 4 days. My body tolerates the Kirkman Labs or Custom Probiotics L. Acidophilus; my body doesn’t like the other legal choices. I worked my way through all of the legal choices during my first year or two on SCD, and also experimented with time of day I take the probiotic, how often, and whether it was with food or not. I eventually found out what worked for me. If you haven’t experimented with the frequency of your dose of probiotics, you might try that. Start off with one capsule or one spoonful of yogurt then wait a few weeks, then have a tiny amount again. Over time move up the dosage to once a week perhaps. But it is also OK to just use it once a month or perhaps once every two months -- you will still get benefits. You don’t want to reach the point your body reacts, however. Of course if your body reacts to a single dose, no matter the brand or what time of day or whether you take it with food, then you might just have to accept that your body is super sensitive to probiotics. At that point you could try using yogurt as a topical ointment or use it as a mouth “swish” since a certain amount of probiotics will be absorbed. What I mean by mouth “swish” is a technique I used when I was dealing with thrush; take a spoonful of yogurt but don’t swallow, swish it around your mouth for 15 seconds or so, then spit it out. Repeat a few times, never swallowing. Wait 30 minutes before drinking anything, so that some of the bacteria will be absorbed. Over time this will help increase your levels of beneficial bacteria. I gave SCD yogurt a valiant try 5 yrs. ago and again 2 or 3 yrs. ago, tried every legal supplement at Whole Foods (and I'm talking the Mother of all Whole Foods here in Austin), SCDophilus, and another legal one that I bought online. Have had trouble with them all. Basicly swelling eyes and brain, fatigue, brain fag, etc. I even cultured cabbage which went okay for several days till I started getting all the above symptoms plus red, weeping " rawness " in the folds of my eyelids. Had gone to so much trouble that I basicly said fooey on probiotics. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR ME? Multitudinous gracias!!! Guest guest
Doesn't Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) also work for yeast? It is the cure for thrush if you develop it while breastfeeding. I have very little experience taking it internally, but I think you can add 3-5 drops to a glass of water and drink it. Anyone tried that? misha My immune system kicks in if I have probiotics too often; sounds like yours does the same even though our symptoms are slightly different. My normal maintenance dose of L. Guest guest
Kim what are the other brands of acidophilus you used (I was wondering weahter to ask if I could buy the batch and try them as so many things react to and just either tired or depressed and giving up for awhile finding and trying something else) Also need to increase HCL am told and since recent stomach pains dont want to add that , but am trying choline and will see if can do some B1 or B's, can be low when adrenals are tired or low thyroid, someone in adrenal support group said my adrenals are tanked after looking at last test results. Its like catch 22. Have been trying this wekk little bits of raw cultured milk, but since am crying(never cry), and sweating(temp98.0) maybe its an infectin. Will go out and collect fresh air ,some D's and try for new frame of mind walk. And then list what house needs done.... Like that can go here and get new outlook on what might work or just need to try again... Guest guest
Lynn It is OK to not use any supplements for a few months and just focus on SCD-legal foods, letting your body heal somewhat before adding in the stresses from dealing with varying types of supplements. Also by just focusing on foods you can identify those that your body tolerates the best. Remember that overworked or overwhelmed body systems don’t deal well with large doses of vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc. that supplements introduce. Supplements can help, of course, but sometimes our bodies aren’t able to cope. I went supplement-free for the first four months on SCD because everyone I tried caused more problems than helped. Eventually my body was able to tolerate tiny amounts of L. Acidophilus, but I couldn’t tolerate a children’s multivitamin (for the low doses) even once a month until about month 6. Granted my experience isn’t the norm, I do have super sensitive body systems. But in my research I’ve frequently come across the recommendation to go supplement-free for a while if you are dealing with chronic symptoms and poor health. When your body is stronger, then you can slowly add in a supplement if you know you are deficient in certain areas. Just a thought. I tend to suggest the minimal approach quite often! I tried all of the SCD-legal L. Acidophilus supplements. Lyosan Acidophilus (from Lucy’s Kitchen Shop), Custom Probiotics L. Acidophilus, Kirkman Labs L. Acidophilus, and GIProHealth SCDophilus. There is a list of these sources in our Group Files, with hyperlinks. I think the differences in my tolerance levels may be due to the culture medium base used by the various companies, but I don’t know for sure. The exception is that the Lyosan Acidophilus does contain skim milk powder (or did when I tried it), which is a definite problem for my body, as I no longer can eat anything dairy. Testing many supplements, including probiotics, is normal for me. I have a routine that I follow for any supplements and medications. Kim M.
