Guest guest
For what it is worth...after I was initially diagnosed, I did not have my cycle for at least a year, and it was not until my health improved that it naturally came back on it's own. During that time though, I remember that I asked at least 2 different natural/holisitc practicioners and neither one seemed overly concerned. I took it as, it's not necessary to get it to be well - there was no risk it posed, and once my body got back on track it to would return, and for me, it did. Now, I was not trying to have a child, so I did not have that factor to consider. I also know if/when I am switching meds or doses, or stressing, it will come late - even now. Tasha So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only had 1 period. That was in October, so I'm almost approaching a year without my cycle. I've talked about this before here, and went to my OBGYN and she did tests that said everything was functioning correctly. To be honest, I don't know what she tested besides my thyroid and FSH.I did the 10 day dose or progesterone and nothing happened. She wanted me to try a month of birth control to see if it would kick start things. I didn't back then, because I was starting to feel really sick again and then went into the hospital. I didn't want to throw anything new into the mix. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a OBGYN that has experience with Crohn's patients? I asked on another board, but nobody had an answer. And when I called to ask about my current OBGYN, she said she had experience, which turned out to be one patient with Crohn's and a nurse whose husband has Crohn's. She didn't know about my medications or symptoms. And nobody I know around here seems to know. I asked my primary care and GI and neither of them knew an OBGYN with Crohn's experience.I get 3 different opinions, my OBGYN said to take the birth control, my Rheumatologist said not to until things are in remission because it could flare my symptoms more, and my GI said it can go either way. I'll be 32 this October and my husband and I would like to try for a baby. I'm really not sure what to do...Would you take the birth control if you were me? I'm also in the process of switching meds since Remicade doesn't seem to be doing much fore me anymore. Should I wait until after I'm on the new med (Humira) for a while? Sorry this is so long. I'm a pretty quiet person in "real life", but for some reason I can't write concisely! Thanks for reading,Amber
Guest guest
So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only had 1 period. I'm not really sure what I'd do in your situation, but I can relate. I've never had a period, since I got UC right when I turned 15 and probably would've normally started. I'm guessing that as soon as we get our gut issues under control, everything else will follow. I guess the question would be, can you wait that long (however long that would be), and also how to do it. Sorry I couldn't help more, but I figured I'd at least say I can sympathize =) Cheers!Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 75 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 15 mg 1x per day (trying to wean!!!!) Guest guest
Just because you don’t have a period, doesn’t mean you’re not ovulating which means you can get pregnant --just harder to tell if you are. I was warned that after having my 2nd son and didn’t have a period for a whole year. Lise Jimmy’s mom So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only had 1 period. Guest guest
How much do you weigh? Low body weight is a reason to stop menstruating. Think about it: the body has to be able to support a pregnancy, and being underweight, poorly nourished, or sick will switch things off. Stress will too. For progesterone to induce a menstrual cycle, there has to be estrogen. The pill will give you both, but it will suppress ovulation and you won't get pregnant. Maybe the gyn is hoping the hormones will jump start the system, or help with weight gain. One thing to ask about is preventing osteoporosis. You need estrogen to build bone mass, so the pill could possibly help there too. Are you getting enough vitamin D? Just some thoughts. Guest guest
Look into taking LDN, and especially before you resort to taking Humira. LDN helps Crohn's a great deal, and a plethora of other immune-system related things. But it can also regulate the kind of issues you describe and help fertility. There's a British doctor that prescribes it almost exclusively for that, with great success. You can't lose. n On Wed, 14 Jul 2010 16:25:46 -0400, fossil.color wrote: > So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only > had 1 period. Guest guest
Thank you everyone for your responses. Tasha, I'm happy to hear yours came back on it's own. Ideally, I would love to just wait until it comes back on it's own, but I'm kind of getting worried that could be a long time, and I know it gets harder to get pregnant as you get older. Alyssa, sorry you're having issues with yours too! Thank you for your sympathy. I hope everything gets under control for you and you can finally receive the " monthly bill " . PJ, thanks for the suggestions. I'm 99% sure it's not my weight, at least at this point. My weight did fluctuate a ton when I first got sick, but when I got back to what I weighed before getting sick, it came back (once). I lost some weight from my last big flare, but I've gained it back and am now just slightly under what I weighed before Crohn's. I'm at a healthy weight and definitely not too skinny. Actually trying to lose a few vanity pounds now! You're right though, I am concerned about possible osteoporosis. I am supplementing vitamin D, but I've never been tested so I don't know how low I am. Lise- Thanks for the heads up. You're right. I still need to be careful, though I'm not sure if I'm ovulating or not. Sorry I keep bringing this up. It's just really starting to worry me, and I feel like the biological clock is ticking. I'm probably making things worse by stressing out about it so much...I need patience. I was never sure I wanted kids, but now I'm kicking myself for not having them before I got sick. But, I can't think like that. I know if it's meant to happen, it will happen. I just get sad, because I know my husband would be the best dad ever, but he hasn't pressured me at all about it. He just wants me to get healthy. Guess I just needed to vent. Thanks for listening. I never realized how much your health can affect everything until I got sick. It's the case of don't know what you got til it's gone! That's OK though. I'll try and remain optimistic and try and think that I really need to get healthy before I can support another life. I just wish I could speed up the process! Thanks everyone, Amber
Guest guest
n, I didn't realize LDN helps fertility. I mentioned LDN to my GI once, and he hadn't heard of it. I don't think he'd be comfortable prescribing it since he hasn't before, though I would like to try it. I do like my GI, though, and I'm not quite ready to cut ties. Guest guest
My cycle have been on and off those past years and I know its related to anemia. When I have a flare and loose blood continously, my red blood cells and iron drop down. My periods stop. But I took iron supplement for a month and they are back ! I know iron supplements are not legal on this diet but it helps my level of energy, it slowed down the diarrhea (because it's constipating) and bring back my periods. So... Guest guest
Amber, Your post made me want to give you a hug! I am 33 with Crohns (dx 2 yrs ago) and so any topic in relation to Crohns usually has some new information in it for me. In March, I went to visit my friend several thousand miles away who has had Crohns since a teen. She feels that her flare ups coincide with her cycle and I hadn't considered that thought before--but now, I would agree. I looked back at my food journal and realized I have to take pain reliever for abdominal pain around my cycle and my BMs are very different around that time as well. Prior to Crohns, my periods were like the moon--constant, typical, and only waivered under severe, severe stress (like the kinds that happen once in 3-5 years). Since my 2nd child (who's 4), they have been more random and definitely not on schedule. This month, it even came 10 days early--still considered " normal " but I not normal for me (I just happened to be out of town without any back up). While I have really no answer for you, I would say that there is a relationship drs have yet to determine between hormones and diet and digestion. I personally like Dr. Christiane Northrup who has been on Oprah and works from a holistic approach rather than a Western medicinal approach. She has books at the library, bookstore, online, and a website. On her site, you can maybe find a link to someone in your area that she recommends. Perhaps some alternative strategies might be helpful--if you are into that sort of thinking, such as acupuncture, reiki, chakras, etc. There are some practitioners out there who aren't quacks that might be helpful to you. Heck, I just read " Eat Love Pray " and made me think that even meditation might be helpful, whether it's to become pregnant, adopt, be okay with no children--whatever path your journey takes you on. Good luck! > > So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only had 1 period. That was in October, so I'm almost approaching a year without my cycle. Guest guest
Aw, thanks for the cyberhug thoughts! (I didn't catch your name, otherwise I would add it here!) I have read a lot about how women's cycles can affect their Crohn's. Lots of people seem to think I should be thankful that I'm not cycling, because it could make my Crohn's worse. I understand what they're saying, but I figure even without my period my Crohn's is pretty active so I may as well get it back! Plus the one time I did have my period after I got sick, I didn't notice any difference in my symptoms. I'm sure we're all different though. I guess I would just like to know why my period took a hiatus and when it's planning to come back. Thanks for the information about Dr. Northrup. I've heard of her before, but I'm not too familiar. I will have to check her out. I'm pretty open to alternatives. First I'm going to call my OBGYN on Monday and ask her if there are any other tests she can do so that I don't have to try the birth control and just hope for the best, because it could certainly get worse. If she can't do anything, I'm hoping to get her to refer me to a reproductive endocrinologist as suggested by a couple of the very helpful members here. Pre Crohn's I was also like you, my period was really regular, except for the 2 rare times that I was overtraining and not eating enough, and it came back when I settled down. Hey, and I started to read Eat, Pray, Love and really liked it! (I got half way through it and had to return it to the library. Need to check it out again.) I've often thought I should take up meditation, because I'm such a worrier and need to calm my thoughts. Though every time I tried I'd get frustrated, because my mind wouldn't shut up! Just means I need to keep practicing though! Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into Dr. Northrup. Take care, Amber > > > > So it's been a year since I've been diagnosed with Crohn's and I've only had 1 period. That was in October, so I'm almost approaching a year without my cycle. To be honest, I don't know what she tested besides my thyroid and FSH. > > > > I did the 10 day dose or progesterone and nothing happened. I asked my primary care and GI and neither of them knew an OBGYN with Crohn's experience. > > > > I get 3 different opinions, my OBGYN said to take the birth control, my Rheumatologist said not to until things are in remission because it could flare my symptoms more, and my GI said it can go either way. I'm a pretty quiet person in " real life " , but for some reason I can't write concisely! > > > > Thanks for reading, > > > > Amber > > >
