Guest guest
, I good friend of mine had WLS surgery in January of 2002. He has had times where he has had the " dumping syndrome " even after all this time. For him it depends on what he has eaten. I had gone to his house one evening to find him going through a dumping episode. I thankfully haven't experienced one yet and I hope I never do. It seemed to have taken everything out of him so to speak. I has sweating from head to toe and had the shakes. I ate a protein bar and two popsicle before he could get things under control. Come to find out or at least this is what he thought had happened. He had had a chicken wrapped sandwich hours before and he thought maybe the wrap was too much. He will never eat that again. I have been told that a food that we once loved we might not again. That doesn't bother me so much. My biggest probably lately has been I seem to be able to eat way more than I think I should at times. At other times it's only a bite or two, but for instance last night I had a toasted sausage sandwich and I ate the whole thing. That kind of scared me. Today I'm afraid to eat much of anything, afraid I'm sabotaging the surgery. Does anyone have suggestions for me? Guest guest
As it was explained to me, when the majority of the stomach is done away with the hunger circuit is shorted out. In other words, the hormone grehlin (sp?) which causes you to want to eat can't get to where it usually goes, and you just aren't interested in food. The body is a remarkable thing, though, and will establish a new pathway, leading to the return of that " got to eat something even though I am not actually hungry " feeling. Usually happens six to twelve months after the surgery. The honeymoon for me lasted about nine months. As far as the nutritional aspects, my dr and nutritionist said that as long as you make a reasonable attempt at getting enough protein, and take your supplements, you shoudl be fine. Believe me, the inability to eat very much will moderate, and you will get much more interested in food as time goes by. Guest guest
I have lost 135-- and hoping to lose more. I have plateaued for the past three months, but I just recently began yoga twice a week, and have lost about a size without losing any weigt. That has really motivaed me to try weights and cardio, but haven't gotten established yet. It is hard to find the time with a small child, and I have NEVER exercised before so the process is as much about making a mental committment as it is about finding the time. As for calories-- I have never counted them. I know that is bad, but I am not that disciplined-- call it the head in the sand syndrome. I am afraid of what I might find out! Guest guest
" " " Actually, I eat 3 meals a day. I may also have an evening snack, but not much. I have done 3 meals right from the beginning because I figured eating more than that a day got me into this mess and I wanted to regulate my body into believing that 3 meals is enough, especially once I was able to consume more food at each sitting. " " What fabulous advice! This should be part of the bypass rules for dummies!!! Helena Lap rny 6.23.03 minus
Guest guest
Helena, Before I had surgery I joined a gym with a daycare. I am a stay at home mom. My little sister was a member there and she encouraged me for about a year before I joined. I fought here convinced that I could work out at home. I tried, it was ridiculous with two kids. I have a friend right now that I am trying to get to join the gym and she is in the " excuses " stage about she can walk around the block and be fine type of thing. She always complains to me baout being " fat " but won't do anything about it. She has NOT had the surgery, but weighs about what I did pre-srugery. I want to tell her so bad (it is horribly rude!), " Eventually you will get tired of being fat and want to do somethign about it rather than whine! " At any rate, my point is this ... I have two small sons (ages 6 and 2) and I love the gym daycare. I signed up for a package for three years and it costs me $30/month. My husband is MORE than willing to fork out the $30/month because it is a small prize to pay for a sane wife and mother! I am ususally at the gym for about 1.5 hours to 2 hours a day either doing a class or cardio and weights. Having time away from my kids (who I do adore) has meant all the world to me. It is a small chunk of the day that is JUST mine. And, my kids like playing with the other kids for a little while as well. It is a lifesaver for me. I would encourage ANYONE to join a gym with a daycare if you have kids! It is a motivator to get your butt to the gym (*we all need to excercise, expecially now!)with no excuses about kids in tow! Good luck and God Bless, Cortney 258/214/142 07/14/04 > > > I have lost 135-- and hoping to lose more.
