Guest guest
What kind of sweetner were they using in the s/f stuff? Is there anything listed as sugar alcohol either in the ingredients or on the nutritional info under carbs? There is a sweetner that is used in diabetic stuff that has a laxative effect. I think it is sorbital but not sure. Sometimes it is listed as a sugar alcohol Lori Owen - Denton, Texas SRVG 7/16/01 Dr. Ritter/Dr. Bryce On Mon, 27 Oct 2003 21:26:58 -0000 " " writes: > I have been having the strangest experience in the last two weeks. > The > first one I had a Low Carb Creations mini pumpkin swirl cheesecake. > I > ate half of it and had the worst dumping episode I've had in a > while. > The next time is today with a Pure Delite Milk Chocolate/Almond > bar. > Both are low carb, so no milk sugars present. > > I was very bad last week and ate some cake (which I've already > fessed > up to,) but I also had some pumpkin spice cake with cream cheese > icing > yesterday. Guest guest
The cheesecake is sweetened with Maltitol, (I checked to make sure after the first dumping episode.) The bar is sweetened with the same. I've had these bars numerous times with no problems, then boom, today, I feel light-headed and just plain sick like I want to return the bar to the toilet. By dumping I am not referring to any type of bowel incidence, I am referring to the light-headed, sweaty, fast heart beat, feeling of nausea and wanting to lay down. Nothing involved at all with the lower end of the digestive tract. M > What kind of sweetner were they using in the s/f stuff? Guest guest
I second what Lori said. The only SF candy or cookies that do not give me diarrhea are the ones sweetened with Splenda. They do have some recipes for desserts on the website, but you have to be careful, because some of them add things like applesauce and molasses (is that weird or what?). They do have the sugar grams listed at the end of the recipe, so that helps. Barbara Jean Re: Dumping on some s/f items??? > What kind of sweetner were they using in the s/f stuff? Guest guest
Actually applesauce and molasses are used a lot in the old diabetic recipes. They are natural sweetners (provided no sugar has been added). Granulated sugar is actually processed and often was not recommended. Besides the applesauce also adds fiber. Guest guest
Thats strange that you are having a reaction to it when you didn't before. The symptoms you are talking about sound more like hypoglecimia. This is usually because the blood sugar has spiked and then plummeted. Sometimes it is just because your blood sugar plummeted. I'm not real sure how it would relate to the bars except that maltitol is similar to sorbitol. It could just be you reacting to the sugar alcohol. But I am merely speculating here. Guest guest
This wasn't a lower intestine issue, it was light-headed, nausea, basically a lot like hypoglycemia without the anxiety. This is what every episode of dumping i've ever experienced has been like. Though, there are times when I had that + the other. > I second what Lori said. Guest guest
A thought just occured to me, what if it isn't the maltitol but rather the fat content of these items? Hmm, never happened to me before, but there is always a first time. All of my dumping episodes in the past have mimiced hypoglycemia minus the anxiety. Rarely have I ever had the intestinal problems that some seem to get. Everyone I have been in contact with says the same, it is like a low blood sugar attack, but different. I think the only time I've ever had the full gamut of problems was when I ate a beef frank and when I had Wisconsin Cheddar soup from Schlotsky's, (because they add sugar to it, I think.) Guest guest
Did you, by any chance, eat these on a totally empty stomach, like maybe first thing in the AM? I find that, occasionally, I'll even have mild dumping symptoms after a protein shake first thing in the morning. It's almost like my stomach wants me to lightly prepare it for anything I may put down there. Tiny bites throughout the day seem to keep it stable, but that's just not always possible. in NJ ************************** > The cheesecake is sweetened with Maltitol, (I checked to make sure > after the first dumping episode.) Guest guest
I just checked the sugar content on a jar of natural, no-sugar-added applesauce. It has 12 sugar carbs per 1/2 cup. That is twice as much as the rule-of-thumb for sugar. I pretty much stick with no more than 6 gm of sugar per 1/2 cup of anything. If I go much higher than that, I get attacked by the carb monster. If there was only a small amount in a recipe and no other sugars, it would probably be fine. Personally I am afraid to have a jar of applesauce in the house, because I really, really like it. Guest guest
>> Thats strange that you are having a reaction to it when you didn't before. Nah, not so strange -- happens to me all the time. One time, maltitol works, another time it doesn't, and when it doesn't, it's just like sugar dumping. I can eat a sugar-free candy bar today and feel fine, and a week from now, the exact same product will make me dump like mad. No rhyme or reason to it that I can figure out. ~~ Lyn G
Guest guest
For some strange reason though, I seem to react much more to supposedly low carb, sugar free items. ===================================== : Even before my surgery I used to get cramps and have to run to the bathroom from s/f items made with aspartame, saccharin, Sugar Twin, Equal, etc. If you eat too much of these items, in some people they can cause a laxative affect and in our case, we would think its dumping. The only sugar substitute I can use without any problems is Splenda and that's because its made from sugar and not man made. Don't throw in the towel so to speak on s/f items. Try to find the ones sweetened with Splenda. This may help you. Regina
