My son had flattening on the side, behind his left ear. None in the back at

all. But like you're saying--my issue wasn't so much with that flat spot; it

was when I noticed his face changing shape, we got concerned. We had him put in

a helmet at 6 months; he turned 1 year old last week and is still in it.

Is her forehead bulging out on that side? I guess the only thing I'm wondering

based on what we were told and have seen is that the band or helmet works on

upper parts of the skull--the flat spot above/behind his ear has rounded and his

forehead is more even. But the things eye level and lower--his left eye pushed

forward, his cheekbone and jaw thrust forward, and his ears--we've seen some

improvement but it's not symmetrical and I don't think it will be.

So--I can vouch for the possibility of correction of forehead and skull issues,

but the facial assymetry is less predictable.

Best wishes; it's scary to start the process but after six months I'm looking

back thinking--not so bad!! (I HOPE we're getting it off Monday, although it

might be one more month . . .)

My daughter is 13 months old and we are scheduled to get her banded. She has

mild plagio where the side of her head is flat as opposed to the back of her

head. She has been sleeping on her stomach since she was like 4 months old so

she mainly lays on the right side of her head/face. At one point the back left

was flatter but has rounded out. I am just wondering if anyone else who banded

got rounding out on the side of the head. For some reason, I feel like this will

be harder to correct but I don't recall if I read that somewhere. I feel like

one of her eyes sits higher becuase she flat on that side. Any experience in

this regard would be greating appreciated.

Thanks,

Annette

Hi,

Sorry, I'm not sure where you mean. Is the flat spot the whole side of

the head? Is it in front by the forehead? Or behind the ears?

My son's flatness went about 25% of the way around his head. It

started on the right side directly behind the ear and went to the

back. So, a lot of the flat area was on the side behind the ear. Yes,

we are getting rounding out on the side behind the ear on backwards.

It has rounded out about half way to perfect and more than that toward

normal range.

Kathy,

The flatness is the entire side of her head but it slants on a sharp angle

starting with her forehead all the way to the back. It kind of looks like the

forward slash sign \ which is why her one eye on that side looks like it sits

higher. I guess I am wondering if the helmet helps with rounding at the side of

the forehead..

Hi,

That sounds different than my understanding of typical plagio.

Flatness right above the ears is opposite to 's situation. He has

a bulge right above the ears. 's head had a slant shaped like /,

but it started right behind the ear.

I would think the helmet could help with the side of the forehead. My

understanding is with right sided plagio, the left side of the forehead

may be flattened. At least CT said had left sided forehead

flattening. (Although I never saw 's forehead this way, and his

forehead was so mild.) I believe the bulge on the right side is fixed

by having the left side of the forehead grow out until the forehead is

even. It seems the side of the forehead could grow out. Maybe, you

should try the helmet and see, unless the cost is a show stopper.

Otherwise, you will always wonder whether the helmet would have helped.

Good luck,

  • 2 weeks later...

My daughter had flattening on the side of her head as well. She was also diagnosed with torticollis. We noticed her ears first. The left ear seemed farther back on her head than her right ear. We got a photo study done, and that is when we could see the asymmetry in her face. We were told that the helmet would help round out her flat side and help with her ear alignment and forehead bulge, but that her facial asymmetry was due to the torticollis. We needed to strengthen her muscles in her face and neck and then her facial features would be corrected. They were right! The physical therapy helped a lot more than the helmet. Her flat spot did round out and her forehead bulge was corrected a bit. Her ears are within normal range now, but her face! Her strong muscles helped to fix the asymmetry plus

she loved physcial therapy! Good luck!
