Guest guest
I was told by a pulmonary specialist that I refer patients to that anyone who has respiratory or gastric bypass (for cancer, wls etc) needs a flu shot yearly and a pneumonia vaccine once. Amber/FL Flu Shot Does anyone know of any reason WE should not have a flu shot? I have never taken one post op and feel the need to do so this year. I have never taken one post op and feel the need to do so this year. Nope, no reason at all -- I get one every year. Haven't had it this year, yet, as I'm getting over a cold, and getting teeth pulled next week. One thing at a time! ~~ Lyn
Guest guest
I get one every year too. I feel that it is important for me, because if I get sick, it's hard to eat or take vitamins or drink enough water. (It just occured to me that I don't really know this for sure. I have not been sick at all since my revision two years ago). Anyway, Dr. Fox recommended them for us every year, plus the pneumonia shot too. Guest guest
Because, in theory, our immunity is compromised. Of course, some of us scare oft the cooties with big bad vitamins. LOL! Guest guest
I think it's 6 in 1..and half dozen in the other. If you want to get it, go for it. I know for the elderly they say that one should get the flu shot. Personally, I do not like anything put into my body that doesn't need to be there..especially something that messes with my immune responses. I've not had the flu for over 2 years..most likely longer. I take vitamin C daily though along with my other vitamins. My parents get the flu shot yearly and every year they end up with the flu lol. Growing up, we were all rarely sick so I just found it odd that my parents didnt' have the flu regularly till they got the shots every year. If I feel a sore throat coming on or under the weather, I tend to pop vitamin C and make sure my zinc is in check. Seems to help me anyway. Guest guest
I got my flu shot last week. I decided that I was tired of catching every little bug that came around. I did make sure I was getting an inactive or killed virus shot. If you get an active or live shot, that will make you sick. I don't even know that they give active vaccinations anymore. In 97, I started getting the flu shots because I would catch everything my kids brought home from school. I continued that for 3 years and never even caught a cold. It stayed with me about 4 years, sniffle free. Last year was horrible. Seemed like I caught something every time I turned around. Mind you, my vitamin levels weren't great. I did load up on the zinc and vitamin C but it didn't help me. I think if I had been on top, it may have. Anyway, it doesn't hurt to have the added protection against getting sick IMO. Are we in special danger if we get the flu, or considered to have a weakened immune system? I get a flu shot annually anyway, but was startled to hear a specific advisory like this. Could you ask him why? I *could* imagine that we might be more in danger of getting a hernia if we have the extended deep coughing you get with flu and pneumonia, I wonder if that's what he's thinking of--but it would be nice to know specifically. Guest guest
There are plenty of reasons to get the flu shot and it's advised by most physicians, but here's my anecdotal point of view: About 10 years ago I asked my internist, at a regular checkup, if I should get the flu shot. He said " nah, " but wasn't real specific as to why not, other than that I wasn't in any risk category. A couple of weeks later my son, in grade school at the time, got the flu. He was *really* sick, high fever for days on end and missed a lot of school. At that point I said the heck with my internist's advice and went out and got the shot. I know that it takes a few weeks after the injection for your immunity to build up fully, and sure enough, I *did* get the flu. However, I had a very mild case. My husband, who didn't have the shot, also caught the flu and was sick for weeks. He ended up with pneumonia, a long-lasting ear infection, and was sick over the Christmas holidays. Since then we've both been religious about getting that annual shot and we've both also gotten the pneumonia shot. I realize flu shots won't help with the common cold, which is a very different beast from influenza. I'm very skeptical of many supplements and herbal remedies (except the vitamins and minerals we all have to take), and never found that popping massive amounts of vitamin C ever did anything for my colds. But I *am* fairly well convinced, just from my personal experience, that the zinc lozenges help reduce the severity and length of a cold. I start taking them as soon as I get that tickle in the throat, and sometimes take a few if someone else in the house has a cold. I use the Cold-Eze brand; I haven't seen a sugar-free variety but the sugar in the regular ones doesn't seem to bother me. Knock on wood, but I haven't had one of those horrible colds that turn into bronchitis or a sinus infection in quite a few years. I hope I haven't just jinxed that! Guest guest
Since getting a *really* bad cold about 4 years ago (put me totally out of commission for more than 2 weeks), I've gotten a flu shot every year. So far nothing as bad as that one incident has happened, so I'm going to keep with the tradition. I figure that with our different absorption it's better to be safe than sorry! -
Guest guest
We do not have compromised immune systems because of gastric bypass. We are, in fact, healthier. We are not in " special danger " because we get the flu, unless we all into the many, many other groups that flu shots are suggested for. It's one doctor's opinion, which I personally have never heard before. It's tempting to think that gastric bypass changes just about everything, or causes many ailments we have just because we're regular old humans. Guest guest
C is a powerful antioxidant, and it seems almost not right, being so cheap & readily available. But I agree, once you HAVE the bug, it's a lil late to beef up on it. The time to take it is ALL the time. At least put up a lil white picket fence if you can't put yourself in a sanitized box. Guest guest
The low protein and albumin that tend to run through " us " is what he indicated. On my very first set of labs, my PCP at the time said my cholesterol was great, but I was walking around without an immune system where my numbers were at the time. Of course, asked my surgeon & he agreed. So, one of my goals is to keep that albumin as high as *I* can. My body has to follow along with the plan, of course. LOL Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
>> We do not have compromised immune systems because of gastric bypass. We are, in fact, healthier. We are not in " special danger " because we get the flu, While I will agree that in losing huge amounts of weight, we are healthier than we once were, a lot of us are in the position of malabsorbing vitamins, which does put us in greater danger of having immune systems that are not fully functional. Not all of us, but a lot of us. And in my case, walking around with an incisional hernia for the past couple of years, the last thing I want to do is go into fits of coughing. Scares the hell out of me (and it's how I got my hernia in the first place, felt the " pop " in the middle of a bad cough.) So *I* will get the flu shot, load up on vitamin C and zinc, and when a cold is coming on hit the ecchinacea tea with a vengeance -- anything to keep from getting sick! ~~ Lyn G

Guest guest
Yeah, I have been thinking about that too. My immunity is better than it has ever been. I have had maybe one cold since my surgery. I think immunity may be compromised for who don't get the proper protein and supplements. I guess the reason I get flu shots is that whenever I don't feel well, even if it's depression rather than a cold or flu, the first thing to go is protein, vitamins and water. So, when I do get sick I get sick faster and recovery is longer, because I'm not getting enough nutrients for fast healing.
