Guest guest
It is my understanding that excess weight, incisions, and a weakened wall around the belly button can all cause hernias (or at least according to my surgeon). It may be a combination of things or just one. Excess weight and incisions can call the abdominal wall to weaken causing the hernia. I am not sure about the explanation of the belly button thing unless the excess weight causes stress around the belly button. My surgeon said that my HUGE hernia was caused by my weakened muscle walls in my incision; and that my weakened muscle walls were caused by the fact that I had an infection in my incision after my surgery. Still, I don't know if everything that man says to me is true. kathy ******************************************* The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. Guest guest
From what I understand, you can have hernias at any time. I've known obese people who get them and have them repaired. Lots of pressure on the muscles from behind, I suppose. Also, when we get our surgical incisions, it creates a bit weaker place for hernias to pop through. So, I think the right answer is all of the above. Insurance paid for my hernia repair, but it was a drop in the bucket as far as overall abdominoplasty costs. in Austin RNY April 1998 Hernias > I'm wondering if the hernias, and hernia repairs, so often discussed are > caused by heavy weight, incisions, or if they are internal hernias caused by > something else. > > Thanks for your help. > > live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt... > > Deb in Hazlet, NJ > " Debbie Dancer " > distal rny > September 3, 2002 > 386/221/165 > BMI 60/32.6/24 > -165 > -92.5 " >
Guest guest
Yes, you can get hernias at any time. My mother, 5'4, 115 lbs, and 20+ years post op had surgery in July to have 3 repaired. She'd only had them about 6 months, so she hadn't lived for years with the condition, they just came up. I had 2 repaired, 3 years post op. But, mine were work-related, in that I got them from heavy lifting (picking drunk transients up off the sidewalk, but that's another story). So, essentially, you can get an incisional hernia at any time. Jac http://www.pictureitdigitaldesigns.com/ http://members.cox.net/XXXFARMPAINTS mail to: jholdaway@... Guest guest
I understand that the weakened muscle walls is what increases our chances of a hernia post wls. Now, when I have my revision along with my hernia repair, am I also at increased risk to get another hernia? & if so, what will help to make this viscious cycle end? If I get another one & it helps me to get a TT, then I won't be too upset, but geesh - I would think it needs to end sometime, yanno? Guest guest
Dr Fox always says our fatty tissue just is not the greatest for healing, along with everything else. The muscle structure is kinda compromised or wimpy. Thanks, Vitalady, Inc.
