Jodi,

I'd say it depends on what kind of surgery. <g>

I had my cancer surgery in April of 2008. Since cancer of the

uterus can spread to the colon, I had a colonoscopy in January of 2009.

<g> It was clear. They told me to come back in ten years.

Thanks Marilyn!

I got a letter from my GI's office in the mail saying I am do- was not sure if

it was a generic letter or what.. meanwhile- a couple of months after surgery-

my surgeon and GI gave me conflicting info as to the dates I'm due to get

scoped. They need to monitor the part of my colon that is still there (cancer

and such)

My acupuncturist says I need to have it done between 18 months and 2 years

(although he does not want me to wait that long) post surgery.

Yes, all this means I need to talk to my GI which makes me so over-joyed. Can

you see me jumping up and down?

As it is my intestine is slow to heal and I deal with Adrenal issues.

I am sure a colonoscopy will be a wonderful thing. ly, I am more worried

about dealing with perforation.

Dang, I be sarcastic today.

From a crohn's board I visit, I see people get colonoscopies as soon as 6 months

after surgery. However, I would suspect it might depend on whether or not you're

having any symptoms.

I just got a letter saying I was due for a colonoscopy. However, my doc didn't

say anything about this during my last visit (she ordered an upper scope at that

time). I'm waiting on a callback to see if she really wants a scope just 1 year

after surgery. I'll let you know what she says :-).

I can't speak for after surgery but I have to get one every 2 years (UC) and I'm

quite healthy.

Thanks Stacey,

That apparently is gonna have to be my norm schedule too. Every two years I

think. Is that common for most UC people? My colon needs to be monitored.

They wouldn't be so adamant if the issues were just localized to my small

intestine.

Jodi

I

often come across a discussion (in the medical literature) of needing a

follow-up colonoscopy in 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, sometimes 5 years, but of

course it all depends on the symptoms and conditions and the type of surgery.

I think it's probably common for most UC people but honestly I don't know that

many of them other than online. Mine is localized as well and only shows

microscopic signs of inflammation (by eye it looks perfectly healthy) but they

still want me to come in every two years. I'm okay with that however because it

gives me an excuse to fast for a couple days to give my system a rest. Usually

I'm too busy doing other, physically demanding, activities to do it. And since

our group is at a higher rate for colon cancer I like to *know* that there's

nothing else going on in there.

Hi Jodi,

I got my call back today, and yes, my GI wants a colonscopy already. They said

that I can wait until my appointment in October to talk about it with her and

schedule. My surgery was Sept 21 (I think), so that will be about a year.

A bit OT, but I got my endoscope results too. Mild henia, mild stomach

inflammation, and mild small intestine inflammation. I saw the pictures, and the

visible inflammation was just a single red spot. My GI thought maybe I would

benefit from antacids, but I told her I'd rather experiment with HCl (I think

it's more likely to be too little acid that is the problem). She was okay with

that. Yeah!

Thanks Holly..

I am going to call my GI today too.

So they saw mild hernia from the endo? Interesting?

Do you ever have a golf ball/grapefruit come out?

My insurance is switching so this isn't the best time to try and get things

done.. buh!

Thanks for letting me know..

Jodi,

No, I don't have any outward signs of a hernia. I sometimes get discomfort in

the middle, right under the rib cage though. Also get heartburn some nights, but

luckily, not too regularly.
