Guest guest
For what its worth, I took my son to Seattle Childrens also and was told he is mild and did not need a helmet either, though he could benefit so was left up to me. he has plagio and was measured at 15mm! from what I am hearing that is more than mild. I was told up to 7 mm is normal..so why do they think 15 was OK?? His second measures were 12 mm though but he has improved. I tried agrresive repo. He's getting his helmet next week....So Anyway, my point is that I think they are a bit lenient there and don't reccoemend it unless really bad. While I don't know much about the brachy measurements, if you really feel strongly about it I think if you are insistant about wanting the treatment they will give you Rx for it. good luck ~le > > I have been seeing drs since my DS was 5.5 months and everyone discouraged me from the helmet. I read that 82 is normal for girls is that right? Am I just obsessing? It has been 3 weeks and I worry about it everyday. Guest guest
Although my daughter did graduate with a brachy number of 92.2, that really isn't considered to be normal. Depending upon who you ask, the severity of that number varies. Using the old stats before the back to sleep campaign, it would be severe. Using some of the more recent opions that I've seen, I would say it is somewhere between mild to moderate, depending upon other factors. In general, I believe that most orthos would recommend a helmet at 92 percent. My daughter started out at 95 percent and we were told that it was "moderate" by our ortho and moderate to severe by our cranial doctor (who judged without measurements since our insurance wouldn't pay for the out of network PT to take measurements). On a scale of 5, she was listed as a 4 in severity by the cranial doctor. So, are there other options for where you can go? Or, is it worth you to try and convince them to do the helmet. They might agree to do it if you say that you want it anyway. , mom to , 26.5 months STARband grad May 2009 Chiro and CST land Re: 8 month old Brachy of 92 For what its worth, I took my son to Seattle Childrens also and was told he is mild and did not need a helmet either, though he could benefit so was left up to me. he has plagio and was measured at 15mm! from what I am hearing that is more than mild. Guest guest
Thanks, it does sound like a helmet will help. It seems like they just want to keep putting me off until it is too late to do anything. I will call monday and keep insisting. Several Drs have said the new normal shape since the back to sleep campaign is Brachycephaly at some level. It is crazy and they don't educate us at all. I do feel a bit guilty that she slept so much and must have been in same position. Thanks again hearing that helmets have helped you encourages me to do more. Guest guest
Hi El, If a kid is 100, that is severe! It does make sense as a cut off. Our specialist recommended banding at 90% and that is rather conservative (many would band in the high 80's). My daughter was 96% when we started and I can't imagine not banding her. Unfortunately Seattle is not a great city for banding. I don't hear many really good stories from there. I think there are one or two Hanger band providers you may want to check out. I think children's may use the clarin helmet from orthomerica (maker of starband) which is a passive helmet and doesn't always give good result (although there are success stories). My daughter graduated at 85%. I though of quitting around 88% and my ortho and specialist both encouraged me to continue. You can see her pictures at Our Plagio Babies S/Sydney M in the group's photo area. -christine sydney, 3.5 yrs, starband grad > > I have been seeing drs since my DS was 5.5 months and everyone discouraged me from the helmet.
