This would be a lot to write, but we could possibly divvy it up between some of the older members and people could add to the file as needed as the common questions arise. It could be a work in progress developed over time.... Absolutely -- these things grow and grow and grow! The file that people get when they join the list has the basics of SCD, and some contact points. I may want to go look and see about updating that, as there are more blogs and recipe sites now. I'd welcome suggestions about what else to include. Gay also sends a list out to newbies who want to contact others in their area for additional support off the list. We are busy, but it seems a lot of us are trying to help as much as we can. We also come to the list with various backgrounds- experienced cooks to none at all. Lol! I'd gotten to the point, when I started SCD, that I'd make a huge pot of pasta-and-something or rice-and-something, and we'd eat that for dinner all week. I just didn't feel up to making much of anything! Even with several months of eating roast-zucchini-eggs-zucchini-roast-zucchini, I wasn't prepared for the level of cooking involved. Time and time, and time again, I'd think, " I want X for dinner, " and then realize I didn't have the yogurt, or I didn't have the bread made, or I was out of oil for mayonnaise.... I would say that starting SCD is overwhelming at first. It is a whole new way of cooking and eating and a volume of information. Nobody " gets " it right away, but it does get better with time and new routines. So try to learn it one step at a time- and know that practice makes it easier. I started with learning to make yogurt- and I decided if I could make yogurt- I could do the rest-eventually. If I did not know if something was legal or OK to eat- I did not eat it until I figured it out- and I made several mistakes in the kitchen too. Spend time reading the board and looking for information, and hang in there. Amen to that! I started with yogurt-making as my first SCD step -- I'd always loved yogurt, and even before I managed to get all the way off the pasta and rice, I was making and eating SCD yogurt. I like to think of myself as a proactive and independent person, but when it comes down to it, I am totally guilty of firing questions that have already come up. We try to pay attention to all of the postings, but sometimes we don't until it is a problem that we start to have. I think the tough thing about SCD is that everyone's diseases are different, we progress at different rates, and our reactions are different... so it's hard to put a cut and dried information sheet out. Which brings us right back to where we are... which is just answering the questions as they come! Right. Which does mean that those of us who have seen a " Is X legal? " question for seventy-eleven times are going to have to hang on to our hats and not come unglued when it comes up for the seventy-eleventh and one time. It's hard, and I know I've heaved a sigh on more than one occasion. I don't want ANYONE to feel their question is inconsequential. Or that the old timers are some sort of clique that newcomers can't become part of. Guest guest
Hi, This is really to the moderators about the newbies and repeat questions .....I wonder if it might be helpful if we note in the memo field how long we have been on the SCD, in addition to noting our question/comment. That would give a clue as to if this might be a very basic question that some might want to skip. Of course, that doesn't help our moderators. I do want them to know that their time and help is greatly valued. While it may seem that I have dashed off a question without trying to figure it out, I have checked BTVC, websites, etc. before asking. Embarrassing as it is, sometimes I feel at the " toddler " stage developmentally on this diet -- I may have the pieces to the puzzle in my hands, but I can't put it all together yet. That said, I also would like to make it clear that I totally understand that the moderators have only 24 hours in a day and other responsibilities in their lives also. They must make difficult choices sometimes about what they can spend time answering. There may be more important questions and things to attend to at that moment. I am totally OK with being told something like " check BTVC " as the answer, or even not getting an answer. That will let me know to find it myself! The advice and help I have gotten has made all the difference to me. I don't think that I would still be with the diet without it, so I do not want to add unnecessarily to our moderators stress and workload. I think that they are extremely caring people and am very thankful for them. Thankfully,JackieIBS to IBD 4+ yearsSCD day 52no meds It's hard, and I know I've heaved a sigh on more than one occasion.
