Guest guest
I agree. It is amazing what adding just a little fat to the diet can do and my skin always feel better with moisturizers. Guest guest
My skin was horribly dry when I went off of my Dry E to have my reconstructive surgery... Marjie Help wanted-sandpaper skin! My face-especially my cheeks (except nose), legs around my ankles and wrists are really, really dry. This is a new thing for me (except my legs). I thought it was just from a makeup change or perhaps our new coal stove. I haven't been wearing make up lately because of it (gasp) and I've had a pot of potpourri on the coal stove but the air is dry (static, etc). Could it be I haven't started vit e yet? I'm working on the fluids, doing pretty good here. Any suggestions? Guest guest
for non-facial parts of the body a GREAT moisturizer is Crisco. I know it sounds yukky but a doc told me about it. She said well if the FDA approves it as something to go IN your body it is safe to go ON your body. A lot cheaper than standard moisturizers, less chance of being allergic. Once you get past the idea of slathering grease on your skin it really works well. Does anyone remember the original Weight Watchers program had 3 fats a day? I was told it was primarily for our skin. Re: Help wanted-sandpaper skin! > I agree. Guest guest
My midwife had us putting olive oil on Joanne when she was tiny to help her flaky scalp. I called it " making a Joanne salad " -- she didn't seem to care, and it did work! My oldest son had infant excema and his pediatrician said the same thing. I didn't do it. It didn't seem quiet right coating a baby in Crisco! Guest guest
I used to use Crisco and it worked great. Don't know why I stopped using it. It would probably be more fun if you mixed it with essential oil, or some kind of fragrence and put it in a nice container. I just used mine straight out of the can, and it was a little weird. Anyway thanks for the reminder. I am suffering again from " winter skin " Barbara Jean Re: Help wanted-sandpaper skin! > > > > I agree. Guest guest
Remember when putting mayo on your hair was the in thing? I wonder if it had anything to do with the fat content. Guest guest
I am sure it does - my daughter, when 6 years old (now 33), had skin so dry on her hands that it would crack and bleed - the dermatologist instructed me to wash her hands, leave them damp and coat them in Crisco then cover with socks or mittens for 24-48 hours. When we took the mittens off, her hands were soft and smooth and not in the least bit dry. Amber/FL Re: Help wanted-sandpaper skin! Remember when putting mayo on your hair was the in thing? Guest guest
I would advise using the lightest olive oil you can find. I heard about olive oil a few years ago and used the most " virgin " I could find. Big mistake. I smelled like a salad and couldn't get the oil smell out of my clothes or sheets and towels. My skin sure felt good though. But the funniest thing I ever saw was the girl next door decided that her hair needed " conditioning " and put petroleum jelly in it. She came to my door crying that she had already washed it with laundry detergent, dish soap, and shampoo about half a dozen times and it was still greasy, LOL! I felt sorry for her, but.... Best thing I have found for dry skin is my dry vit E. I just don't run out of it! Didn't have this problem before surgery. Just the reverse; had to wash my hair daily and sometimes twice a day. Guest guest
We had a real disaster when my daughter was about 12 - I woke up on a school morning and heard her crying in the bathroom. I went in and her waist length hair was in one spike!! Seems she had found some very old Aberto VO5 and used it. She had washed her hair 7 times by the time I got up. I washed it 5 more times - still the spike!! Then I did what we did in Critical Care when someone came into the unit after a car accident (blood and glass, grass and goop from the ER etc.), I went strand by strand with an alcohol swab. Used an entire box and STILL one spike. She was almost hysterical and I was absolutely befuddled. Finally phoned our beautician who told us to use a laundry de-greaser. One wash and her hair was clean. We both still have nightmares about that day!! Amber/FL Re: Help wanted-sandpaper skin! > Remember when putting mayo on your hair was the in thing? Guest guest
This morning, in my typical eyes still closed way, I washed my hair with body wash. Sigh. Wow, I think it foamed up better and was squeaky cleaner than with shampoo! LOL! Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. Guest guest
Hah! I can go ya one better on " eyes still closed " stories. Those of you who still have a hanging panni are probably familiar with various ointments used to treat the skin irriation one sometimes gets from that? A few weeks ago, I brushed my teeth with it. Can you say YUCK? and EWWWWWWWWWWW? Guest guest
If this " sandpaper " skin is rather sudden onset, I'd see a dermatologist. I had that once and it turned out to be some kind of eczema, brought on by too much sun. I got a prescription cream that cleared it right up. The fact that it's on legs as well as face may mean it's different, but it wouldn't hurt to check with a specialist. Celia
