Guest guest
Hi . I am sorry to hear that Barney is not feeling well. What Marilyn (the moderator) is asking is for is for you to be more specific. There are many people with UC on this site, but it is very hard to help you without any information. Please let us know exactly: 1. What is he eating? 2. What medications or supplements is he taking? 3. What are his symptoms? -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 22.5mg Prednisone > > HI, everyone, My name is Gilbreath and my husband is Barney , we have been married 36yrs. 3 months ago he was told he has Ulcerative Colitis. Anyone with Ulcerative Colitis? Hi, , Welcome to the list -- we're glad you found us, though sorry you needed to. How long have you been doing SCD? Are you keeping a food diary? That is, are you writing down what he eats, how it was prepared, and when he ate it? And are you (or is he?) keeping track of his movements -- when they are and, er, what they're like? Keep in mind that healing isn't going to happen overnight. The fact, though, that he's already seen some improvement is a big plus. If you can tell us what he's eating, some of us should be able to offer some suggestions. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle

Guest guest
Hi , SCD is a long term process and there can be a lot of up and down in the beginning. Some people tolerate the yogurt well, and others have to build up to it, starting with a little bit at a time. Keeping a food diary is helpful because we all tolerate different foods. It also helps because weeks/months later we can look back and say " wow " this is so much better now and I hope you will too. I know you want him to gain, but in the beginning, many people lose some weight on SCD, but gain it back later on as the gut gets better and more food is tolerated. As sick as your husband is, I would focus on foods that will settle the gut. The best one that I know of is a broth soup using the bones. The gelatin from the soup bones is good for the gut, so if he can eat a good amount of this, the better. Use the chicken soup recipe in BTVC and simmer the soup for a long time- different times for the different meats you use: " Vegetable stocks take 1-2 hours, fish stocks 45 minutes (any longer and it gets cloudy), and veal & chicken stock cooks overnight. (Note: Sally Fallon says, " 2 hours simmering is enough to extract flavors and gelatin from fish broth. Larger animals take longer – all day for broth made from chicken, turkey or duck and overnight for beef broth. " " Add some vinegar to the broth to get as much of the nutrients out of the bones. It is important that he stays on his medication. Have him eat small amounts during the day instead of larger meals. Avoid fried foods- I don't know how you cooked the pork chop- . Have him sip on the soup throughout the day to stay hydrated, and foods like baked chicken, well cooked pureed apples (home made applesauce), broiled ground beef patties, dry curd cottage cheese or dripped SCD yogurt are better tolerated. In the beginning I only tolerated yogurt dripped (look for a recipe for yogurt cheese- basically strained yogurt). Some people do not tolerate eggs in the beginning, and carrots as well. My favorite treat was very ripe bananas. I froze them and it felt like I was eating ice cream. Make some legal SCD gelatin with legal grape juice. Keep it bland a simple at first. I hope he feels better soon. PJ > > Good morning, Thank-you for your reply last night, my computer is acting up > some so I just went to bed after I wrote the email last night. Okay - that is way too much yogurt for a newbie - because the yogurt has a powerful probiotic in it which, when too much is introduced too suddenly, can wreak havoc in the gut. So take him off yogurt for a few days - until things settle down. What you should do right now today this morning, is make chicken broth. You can take the meat off the bones and keep on cooking the bones in the broth up to 24 hours - although he can eat some while it is cooking. This is a way to put gelatin into the soup stock, which is very soothing for an inflamed gut. The reason that the yogurt is unsettling the gut is because introducing that many probiotic bacteria into the gut at the same time, before the patient is used to it, is going to cause a lot of die off or conflict with the pathogenic bacteria population that is already resident in his gut - hence, the problems. So for the next few days, I would have him stick to the chicken or meat bone broth and pureed carrots - if that is something he can tolerate and things like pureed zucchini. He can also introduce a soft boiled egg into the chicken broth and stir it around, which makes the broth richer and more satiating. When you reintroduce the yogurt, when his gut is more stable again, start with about a tablespoon and work up from there each day slowly. Or if you want to be really cautionary, start with a teaspoon. Soon you can start to give him yogurt made from half and half to help with weight gain, or even better, full cream yogurt. The spinach should initially be pureed as well. Because that is easier to digest. The beginning of the diet is a bit like eating foods with the texture of baby food. Pureeing everything is very helpful. You can add butter and coconut oil to the carrot/zucchini/spinach purees for extra weight gain. And if you can locate farmer cheese - DCCC = dry curd cottage cheese - in order to make the intro cheesecake, that helps a lot in getting through the beginners diet. And is also good for maintaining weight. He's not going to gain weight on the first few weeks of SCD - so don't push food at him to keep on eating - first things first - and the most important thing at the moment is to heal his gut so it doesn't get any worse. When his gut is healed, which can take some time, the weight will come. Sometimes too much comes, depending on his body type. Good luck - the beginning can be rocky - so ask away. I MADE OUR VERY FIRST YOGURT WITH HALF AND HALF CAUSE I DID NOT KNOW ANY BETTER.that's okay - as long as it ferments for 24 hours. OF COURSE HE WANTED TO EAT THE YOGURT . AFTER EATING INTRO 5 DAYS, IF I AM UNDERSTANDING YOU DO CHICKEN SOUP ONLY , A DAY OR TWO. ONE SOFT BOILED EGG ONCE A DAY? IN SOUP. PURRED VEGGIES TONIGHT OR WAIT ON THOSE TILL TOMORROW ? NOOOOOOOOOO YOGURTTTTTT.Give him a lot of soup - several times a day. He can eat that with a soft boiled yolk - or without - every time. He can also eat the chicken from the soup (or meat - if you give him beef bone soup) several times a day. This soup - cooked a long time with the chicken or meat bones - is best because it is very healing becausethe gelatin helps soothe and cure the intestine. You can also give him some plain roasted meat - and you can also give him home made SCD mayonnaise -recipe in the SCD book - in the soup or with the meat. If he is tolerating carrots, give it to him pureed - first cooked into the soup until very soft - several hours andthen mashed or pureed. You can add butter or olive oil or coconut oil to this and salt and pepper. Every other day add in a soft vegetable like pureed zucchini or spinach - time it out to make sure he is dealing with it okay first. You can add in cheese also if he can handle that. Each time you add somethingin - beyond what is on the intro diet - give it a few days to make sure you are dealing with it okay first. That much yogurt - while delicious - is going to cause a lot of intestinal havoc and distressin the very beginning. BTW, I did exactly the same thing and also had a bad reaction to it; I'm sure that happens frequently. GOT IT. TILL LATER.THIS WK. I AM PANICKY I HAVE BASICLY GOT ONE MONTH OR MAYBE 6WKS. TILL THE SURG ERY APPT EARLY SEPT/ HIS REG DR. SET HIM UP WITH A SURG APPT TO SEE A SURG. DR. TO "TALK" ABOUT SURGERY.TO TAKE HIS COLON OUT. Best thing to do for yourself is de-stress. Try and be calm about the SCD, because at times it cantake a lot of patience. And stress is communicable and is also really bad at causing symptoms in people with autoimmune disease. Most of us - when we have a lot of stress - also have symptoms. If you can, take a yoga class or practice deep calming breaths. Or take a long nature walk. If your husband is up to doing gentle exercise - even long walks, etc., that is also very goodtherapy for him. People with auto-immune disease chronically are low on endorphins -so exercise (gentle or not at all), which creates endorphins, is excellent therapy for us. Before you consider surgery, please also look into doing SCD with LDN (low dose naltrexone) -It is an excellent combo therapy for many of us - works much better than most other drugs. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/lowdosenaltrexone/Lot of people here will jump into help you guys out before you are close to hitting surgery with advice and help. Just remember - even if you get impatient, the best approach on SCD is slow and patient. So don't rushadding new things in or in huge amounts, as that approach can backfire a lot. Guest guest
Hi , I can sure sympathize with your anxiety and wanting quick results, since your husband faces a surgery discussion with the doctor. I hope you will be able to calm down, though, as it's hard to do all this when one is feeling frantic. The diet is not instant help, more slow but sure. I hope by the time the month is up you will have figured out what foods do work for your husband and things will have calmed down some, at least. What I'm wondering is, maybe when you have that meeting with the doctor, perhaps you can do a bit of negotiating. In other words, OK, things won't be all well, but maybe they won't be any worse, either, and we will hope they will be a little better, in which case try to negotiate for a few months to see what happens. That's what I'd try for, I think, as long as the situation isn't dangerous, though I don't have your husband's problem. I know others who do have the same problem will give you good advice here. Good luck, hang in there!
Guest guest
Hello in Dallas - This Is in Austin!! I have UC and when I was very sick this past winter and spring I lost 25 pounds. I am now 5 months into the diet on no drugs at all except for some supplements and chinese herbs from my acupuncturist. I have gained most of the weight back and have one to two BMs a day - normal ones!! I was starving all the time the first month of the diet - maybe the first 6 weeks - and I just ate lots and lots of cooked squash, eggs, chicken soup, meat, fish - pretty soon I could add more cooked veggies and cooked fruits then some cheese and now I can even have almond flour. Basically what I am saying is this will get better!!! It will take time though - the first month is truly the most difficult and even month 2 and 3 I still had bad days - as in a day where I would have to go many times, passed some blood, had pain! But these days were rarely two in a row and as of month 4 I no longer have those days!! Try to get your husband to do some light excercise - slow walking, easy yoga, breathing - it will help his mental and physical state lots of good - and if your doctor makes you nervous get a new one!!!! They should be helping you -not scaring you!! Your husband's body is stronger than he thinks - and certainy stronger than most GI doctors think. He can actually get better and heal his colon - many many people have done this. I hope things keep improving and try to remember this will take time. Bets of luck! > > > > > > > THANK-YOU MARA S. , FOR EMAILING BACK ABOUT MY HUSBAND BARNEY, HE WAS SO VERY HUNGRY SUNDAY AND I POURED SOME HONEY ON IT . Just wanted to say hi and feel free to email me if you have any questions or if I can help you find something--maybe.
