Guest guest
Hello! I am new to the group, and have some questions that maybe someone out there can help me with! I have an open bite (when I close my teeth, I can stick my tongue through my mouth). I have learned to deal with it the past few years, but it has become a real pain in the neck. I only chew on my widsom teeth, and have trouble eating certain foods (pizza, lettuce, etc.), and have lots of cavaties on my back teeth regardless of how much I brush. I am in the process of learning about the surgery, but wanted to hear peoples opinions. Since I have dealt with my open bite for the past few years, is the surgery really worth it? My dentist was going to do a mold of my teeth to see if they could help out my bite by removing my wisdom teeth. Is the post-surgery awful? Does anyone have any oral surgeons to recommend in New York city? THANKS! Carly
Guest guest
Carly, I just had a lefortI advancement for an underbite in nyc. I used a plastic surgeon (he deals with cleft lip/palate patients) that was wonderful...but probably not relevant to your situation. I have seen a wonderful periodontist though (the absolute best in the city) named Dr. Tarnow. His office is close to bloomies (added bonus) and he also does regular dental visits. I strongly encourage calling his office and seeing what OS he would recommend...and potential scheduling a consult (maybe free?) He is absolutely brillant!!! My ortho was Dr. Ingrid Barillas - she's located on E36th and 2nd. She is also fabulous!!! Her husband (Dr. ) also works in Dr. Tarnow's office...it's one big happy dental family ) I hope this helps...and if you need any advice I'm always here... -becky > Hello! Guest guest
Hi Carly, You sound like you had exactly what I had pre-surgery. I had a severe open bite (look up my pics under the folder called SARA to see pre and post op pics) which I had tried to have corrected through many years of orthodontics when I was younger. Unfortunately none of it worked and I had increasingly worse problems with chewing food as well as TMJ pain. I had my surgery on June 6th in New York. Now at 5 weeks post-op I don't regret doing the surgery one single bit. The improvements are already visible to me and all my swelling hasn't gone down yet and I'm still on a soft diet. My orthodontist was Dr. Diamond on East 61st Street between Park and Lexington. Tel number is . He has been treating orthognathic surgery patient since the 1970s and is very experienced with the field. Best of all, he was able to get me ready for surgery in only 6 months! All of his staff are very New York style i.e. very open and friendly but sometimes chaotic. They've always gone out of their way for me. On my last appt. pre-surgery both Dr. Diamond and his wife (who is the receptionist) hugged me and wished me good luck and on the day of my surgery Dr. Diamond called my OS immediately to see how it went. In other words he is a very caring doctor despite having several patients to follow. My oral surgeon was Dr. Sachs and he was AWESOME! I could not have asked for a better doctor ever. You can find more info on him and his practice at www.nycoms.com. He is known as one of the best in NY for orthognathic surgery and I know for a fact that he has operated on a lot of open bite candidates with success. I chose him over another OS I was seeing in NYC because of his excellent bedside manner and the fact that he was always available for me to talk with. I have his cell phone and email where I can contact him all the time. He personally puts in calls to me instead of having his receptionist call me and refer messages to me. He kept me calm throughout the whole procedure and explained everything step by step. I highly recommend him and I know a few other members on this board who were also operated by him and were very happy with the results. He has an office in NYC on 57th St and Park but he is only there a couple of times a month because he has two more offices in Long Island. Because I really wanted him to do my surgery I was willing to commute to Long Island (Lake Success). In fact I had my surgery done at Long Island Jewish hospital which was a lot cheaper than having it done in Manhattan. Dr. Sachs also operates at Cornell Presbyterian hospital in NYC. If you do decide to set up an appointment with him make sure it's either with him or Dr. Schwarzt NOT dr. Neugarten. His bedside manner is not so good. If you have any questions don't hesitate to let me know Carly. I'm happy to meet up with you too if you want to discuss in person and see the results. I live in Italy now (moved back 3 weeks post surgery) but I will be back on July 28th to have a check up visit with Dr. Diamond and Dr. Sachs. Best of luck, Sara > Hello!
