I have a question about taking vitamin/meds? I'm confused when to take these.

Do most of you take with a meal? I'm concerned that I " wash " them out when I

take them during the time when I drink my liquids. If this happens is the

vitamins/meds effective?I am still on anti-depressants due to the emotional

affects of my divorce and I'm concerned that I am not getting the benefits from

it

like I should be. Anyone knowledgable in this area?

We may not be " knowledgeable " but we sure as heck all have opinions and

here's mine:

I take meds about 10 minutes after I eat with a very small sip of water to

not break the " no water " rule and rinse out the food. I feel like having

food in my stomach keeps the pills from " dropping " straight through the

digestive tract and not getting broken down. I know it takes the food a

while to make the journey, and I picture the pills sitting on top of the

food a while.

I do try to take as many chewables as possible, and capsules. I try to

avoid the hard, big pills since there's anecdotal evidence they don't always

have time to dissolve. I've never seen this personally.

Never underestimate the power of saliva in breaking down pills. I'm a big

fan of having food on board with pills. Makes a good Spit Vehicle, doncha

thing?

It is generally advisable not to take supplements at the same time as a

meal. Some supplement easily break down. If there is food in the pouch

or stomach for the BPD/DS patients, the vitamins can combine with other

substance to form an unabsorbable compound. This is the problem with

ferrous sulfate. It is very absorbable. It breaks down in plain

water. If you take it with a meal, the iron molecules combine into

unabsorbable compounds. If you take it by it self, then there should be

no problem with absorbing it.
