Guest guest
Holly, I've been taking HCl for many years because when I had the test, I produced absolutely none. The doctor told me then to take two caps for every ounce of protein I ate, but it's 35 years ago and I don't remember what size caps those were, sorry. However, here's what I do. I take betaine HCl caps, with 648mg HCl or something like that. I take one or two with my protein meals. You are right, you don't need them if you just eat an apple or something. When I started the diet a year ago I was only able to eat about half an ounce of chicken. Now I can manage two ounces, and I'm taking 1-2 caps, so apparently I must be producing some by myself now. I did stop them to see if I was OK without, and I wasn't. My symptoms were sort of vague but when I went back on it, I felt better. NOW supplements seem to be very good. This is the same stuff in it as the one I have now. You can try more, on cap at a time, and see if you feel better. If you feel hot or heartburn, take a bit of baking soda in water to neutrallize that, and then go back down by a cap I have a question for those who take Betaine HCl. How many do you take per meal, and do you take them with every meal? I just started taking one Betaine HCl with supper (the only meal that I eat meat), and wonder if I would benefit from more. I've read that your stomach should feel warm. It did the first night I took it, but it hasn't since then. It certainly doesn't give me heartburn (in fact, I had heartburn on the 2 nights I didn't take it), so I think it's safe to say I've been suffering from too low of stomach acid. This is the brand I'm taking: http://www.nowfoods.com/Products/ProductsAlphabetically/M003463.htm TIA Holly
