Guest guest
Maybe it's the rice? Just a guess. I loved Chinese food pre-op and still enjoy it now. But I stick to the proteins and maybe a little chow mein. E. Valencia qcmanager@... Chinese Food - any one else have issues/ problems? I can eat just about anything except Chinese food. Last time I had it at 11 mo post op, I threw up for the first time post-op. So, hadn't had it again until last night. Thought it had been the soy sauce which I have avoided, so I had shrimp with lobster sauce over white rice-white sauce...but noooooo, I had pouch pain for hours on such a small amount. Anyone know what it is in Chinese food that would cause this? And, anyone else have similar problems with it? It was a long time fav pre-op... When I make stir fry at home I have no problems with it, but when I eat Chinese out, I usually don't feel so good. I can eat egg rolls or spring rolls (as long as I skip the dipping sauce) and I look for dishes that are unsauced (things like grilled chicken on a stick). But I can definitely sympathize with you - Chinese food is one of the few things I don't do well after my surgery. Guest guest
You probably can eat Chinese food IF you tell the waiter to use very little oil. The cooks usually use lots of oil because it keeps the food from sticking to the wok and they can just slide the food from the pan onto a dish. LOL. When I went on my cruise last year the buffet had an omelet station with a very long waiting line. I asked the cook for a 3 egg omelet, only one yolk, no oil. He looked at me weird but, of course, had to do it. Well, the darn thing stuck all over the pan and wouldn't come out. With a look of disgust, he took the pan back into the kitchen and got a new one. Poor guy. I opted for oatmeal. Vicki A. > I can eat just about anything except Chinese food. Last time I had > it at 11 mo post op, I threw up for the first time post-op. Guest guest
It took me about 18 months to be able to truly be able to eat chinese food. I don't do the rice but will occasionally do the chow mein. I can even do the lo mein but not rice. It's funny because I use to live at the chinese buffets here in town. Chinese doesn't even sound good anymore. Guest guest
For me it is rice. If it isn't REAL FRESH or if it is over cooked (as in over fried) then forgetaboutit! I have similar problems with sushi (which I love). If the rice isn't cooked just right or if it is left overs I will sometimes have a problem with it. Guest guest
I find that I can tolerate only very small amounts of both pasta and rice. Too much and I just feel awful. Been sick for the last couple of days and my niece brought me some " chicken soup " which actually turned out to be a bowl of noodles with a few carrots and a little bit of broth. Drank the broth, ate the carrots and had 1 spoonful of the noodles and knew that I'd better stop. Haven't had any problem with occasionally having Chinese, but I do stick mostly to the proteim and vegetable items. Guest guest
It took me about 3 years before I could tolerate any rice, and now it's just tiny amounts and well cooked, like in soup. I can eat angel hair pasta no problem, unfortunately, because it's one of my favorites, same with noodles in soup. Other pastas have to be eaten in tiny bites, not unlike meat. But, I've always had a problem with chicken. It's just usually too dry. KFC chicken, on the other hand, is fine, probably because of all the grease. The real problem I have with KFC is that I have to eat the breading and skin...it's just the best part, and of course, the worst for us. Good thing I don't have it very often. in NJ ********************* > I find that I can tolerate only very small amounts of both pasta and rice. > Too much and I just feel awful. Guest guest
I'm the original poster. Had several replies, some indicating that it may be the MSG. I know its not the rice, as I can eat rice with my chili or in a stuffed pepper with no problem. Someone else mentioned the sesame oil-not sure if that is in shrimp with lobster sauce as it would be with the brown sauce dishes. Dare I try this again without MSG??? I think if I do, I will wait a while. One thing you learn once you get sick is not to rush to try it again. Now if I could just figure out how to get sick on chocolate????! Guest guest
The first year post-op, I ate almost exclusively things that were naturally low-fat, high-protein, and low-carb. I had trouble with land-based meats so this consisted of a lot of seafood, tofu, lentils, and soy-based imitation meats. The 2nd year I expanded my options and began to include fresh fruit, vegetables, and some low-carb pastas and breads. I am just starting my 3rd year of post-op life and Chinese food as well as some other ethnic foods are becoming very appealing to me. However, I have discovered Chinese food as well as a lot of the other ethnic foods are great when cooked at home but risky when eaten out. When served at restaurants, everything depends on how the individual restaurant prepares the recipe and what they like to add or use as " fillers " . For example, I love shrimp with lobster sauce but at one buffet it tastes great and I could eat it by the quart (light white sauce with tofu chunks as well as small tender shrimp) and at another, one spoonful let me know it wasn't going to be pretty if I tried to eat very much of it (made with cheap imitation crab, lots of cornstarch or flour as a thickener, and more peas and carrots than shrimp.) To be safe when I go out, I skip the rice altogether and focus on just picking out a few of my favorite things then trying to get as little sauce as possible on them. Last week I enjoyed Bourbon chicken but I am still not up for sweet and sour anything. Even things like rice vary. I can't eat hot white minute rice but can eat the cold rice that comes in sushi as long as I make sure there is less rice than whatever is around it. I like the vegetarian sushi rolls with avocado, cucumber, carrot, or other yummy contents surrounded by rice and the wrapper. Most of the time, the rolls are served with green mustard and pickled ginger. I find if I wrap the roll in the ginger and eat them together, my stomach doesn't bother me afterward. B.
