Guest guest
Reni - I think the vast majority of people undergoing Orthognathic Surgery have had braces pre-surgically and it depends on the person and how aligned their teeth are for the surgery. I think there have only been a few people on this site that have lucked out and been able to escape the inevitable pre-surgery stint in braces. I, for one, absolutely need the braces, as my teeth are not in the correct alignment and position in my jaws (arches) for the surgery. ~~ Diane-- - In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " reni_mill " <reni_mill@y...> wrote: > Has anyone made it through this without pre-op braces. Guest guest
A few people have gone through the surgery without braces but had arch wires instead which sound worse than the braces. Most people do need braces even if they have had braces previously and their teeth seem pretty straight. The braces are needed to move the teeth so they come together properly once the jaws are moved. For example, I've had my braces now for nine years so my teeth are perfectly straight. Now after my last surgery I have a decent bite but only one tooth touches on the left and two on the right. Now my orthodontist has to do some tweeking so my teeth fit together better. I still have at least a year left in braces. Also, what kind of symptoms are you having? If you have TMJ problems you need to know that orthognathic surgery won't necessarily help your symptoms. Most do get relief but not all. Some actually get worse. I am one of those. My surgeon took all the precautions to protect my joints (doing it in two stages because of the huge movements needed and using distraction to lengthen my lower jaw gradually) but my joints still deteriorated. My right joint was fused and my left condyle was gone completely. I've just had my sixth and hopefully final surgery (bilateral total joint replacement). I don't want to scare you but you do need to know the risks of going through with the surgery. > Has anyone made it through this without pre-op braces. How does that > work? Guest guest
Hello, I had my surgery without pre-op braces. My surgery was mainly done for my sleep apnea, but I did have an open bite. My teeth were fairly straight, so we opted to wait for the braces to be done after the surgery to " fine tune " my bite. I did have to have temporary braces put on for the surgery (it may be what is calling an arch bar). They were metel and wired in. They were worse then regular braces. Now my supposed " fine tuning " has turned out to be 16 months in braces. Go with what the OS says, maybe get second opinion. Unfortunatly, as noted with her " whats a year " comment concerning her situation, the whole orthognathic surgery process requires a lot of patience. Good Luck, keep us posted. a > Has anyone made it through this without pre-op braces. How does that > work? Is it an option or does it depend on the person? Are there > options in place of braces? Guest guest
Thanks for your response. I just feel better knowing that there is the possibility of not having to do the pre-braces. I wake up every morning w/ a headache from clenching my jaw. There is so much tension in my face and now my jaw is shifting. I did well for years using anti-inflammatories. Unfortunately, they eventually caused an ulcer. Now nothing seems to help. Thanks again for a positive spin, and I will keep my fingers crossed. - -- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " russ84brit86 " <russ84brit86@y...> wrote: > Hello, > I had my surgery without pre-op braces. Guest guest
Hi, I had my surgery last month without pre-op braces. And my surgery was also done mainly for sleep apnea. My insurance covered the whole procedure which was a Lefort 1, upper and lower jaw advancement, plus genioplasty, my OS also fixed my deviated septum, removed an impacted wisdom tooth, and widened the back/upper area of my palate. I am wired shut through both upper and lower jaws, plus banded. I'm beginning to get a lot of unwanted movement with my teeth though, and so I am beginning to suspect I will very likely have to have braces put on once I am healed well enough to do so. Guest guest
Thanks for the info. How long are you wired shut? I hope I can talk if wired. I think my head would explode if I couldn't talk. rainbow55076 wrote:Hi, I had my surgery last month without pre-op braces. And my surgery was also done mainly for sleep apnea.
