This whole " amount " issue was bothering me to distraction yesterday, my day

of popcorn infamy. Background: I ate a WHOLE bag of popcorn, no problemo.

One of those 3 serving bags. This was around 12:30 pm. Naturally I

started to think that my surgery had failed and I was once again a bottomless

pit.

Well by dinnertime at 5:30 pm, I was able to eat only about 3/4 of a 4 ounce

cheeseburger (yes it was on a bun). Maybe 4 small oven fries too. That was

IT. I was on the verge of exploding. I was VERY happy to feel this way!

My pouch was in fine form & doing it's job! YIPEE!

So the moral of the story is: I think it depends on what kind of food, and

also about how on some days you can eat a bit more/or less than on others.

Sometimes there is no more joyous feeling than knowing that your pouch still

works! LOL! I just barfed this afternoon after lunch (I tried to put a bite

of cheesecake on top of some chicken) and I couldn't be more thrilled! We're

weird ones, aren't we?

I've got to agree with this! Last night while the kids and I were at the

mall I realized I needed to eat something...funny how before surgery it seemed

as

though I was always planning my next meal/food-fest, last night while walking

the mall and taking in the sights of Christmas...yes the malls/stores are all

decorated for Christmas...i started to feel like I needed to eat (I get the

shakes/light headed feeling if I forget to eat...) anyway, the kids wanted

Burger King and I usually get a salad from BK but a chicken sandwich sounded

sooooo good (minus the roll), I ate about 1/2 of the first half and took another

bite, it was then I realized...my gosh if i swallow this Gerty (the name my

family has come up with for my pouch) will NOT be happy! I picked up a napkin,

spit it out ever soooo carefully so as no one would notice, when my 15 yr old

daughter asked " Mom are you getting sick? " I explained no, but I'd had one bite

too many, realized I had to get rid of it rather then let it go down and then

proceeded to tell the kids that here it is, 1 yr out and my pouch is still

intact! :) THANK YOU GOD! :) The rest of the night it was an ongoing joke as

to what Gerty woulda done had I swallowed that bite! LOL!

OMG Sherry! I was peeing my pants when I read this! GERTY! That is

hilarious! I LOVE IT! That is so charming that your family has named your

pouch! Okay I am dying to know the derivation of Gerty ... why that name? I

hope it isn't related to a miserable case of G.E.R.D!

You will appreciate this: when I had my belt lipectomy back in Sept. they

sent me home with the customary 3 drains and right away my husband and I named

them: Puffy, Gushy & Parchy (one puffed up, one was very prolific, and one

was rather arid in it's output -- we weren't particularly imaginative LMAO!)

However, it never occurred to us to name my pouch, I think because my pouch

doesn't have alot of personality (sort of like those friggin' drains did!)

ROFL!

My husband got a big kick out of your Gerty too!

What you're saying makes alot of sense, Beth. The rational part of me

understood what was happening when I chewed up ALL that popcorn (the actual

volume

was compacted) -- it was the nutso part of me that got a little panicky. I

do a big big bowl of salad every day -- same concept. Even so, I will often

do my dinner salad for my afternoon snack about 2 hours before dinner, this

way I can get in another veggie with dinner, which I think is advantageous to

good health. I recall whenever I asked Dr. Gagner about ultimately how much

food I would be able to ingest, he always spoke in terms of CUPs (he said about

1 1/2 cups) -- not ounces. But if I'm home I will measure out my protein and

my fats (an old Weight Watcher's habit I guess, but done now, as you say,

mostly to get a feel for nutritional value.) Still, I have noticed that 3

ounces of sea bass sits alot different in my pouch than 3 ounces of hamburger

meat. And I bet 3 ounces of rice would sit enormously different!
