Guest guest
Hi Alyssa, Have you asked your doctor about this? There are many reasons why liver enzymes would be elevated- and I would think she would want to know why. I don't know anything that gets them down besides addressing the reason they are elevated in the first place.. Infection, inflammation, medications, alcohol ( not a problem here). Many drugs are metabolized by the liver and it can rev up the enzymes to deal with them, or it can just be irritated on it's own. Some examples of drugs are Tylenol, some pain killers, and others. Even a virus can get your liver enzymes up. Some of the other labs you had may give a clue. I would ask your doctor about this. You are a really bright teen and deserve a thorough explanation. I hope this resolves quickly... and you feel better. PJ > > What are some things I can do to help my liver? Guest guest
Have you asked your doctor about this?Yep. We know it's either my digestive enzymes or the azatioprine since those are the only two things I've been taking. I've already stopped taking both, I was just hoping there was some way to accelerate the process of my liver healing. My doctor said it could take anywhere from a few days to a couple weeks for things to return to normal. Thanks PJ! Guest guest
Ugh- that sucks sweetie! And I know how hard you work at doing the diet- it can be so discouraging to have things like this get out of whack. My liver enzymes were all over the place when I was first diagnosed when I was 17. That was even before I was on any drugs. I've even been diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, which seems to have come and go as well. I don't ever remember them not scoping me because of it though. Just curious why? Well I know I have absolutely no advice, just wanted you to know someone else was out there feeling your frustration!!! I hope your levels get back to normal soon. -Joanna >My doctor said it could take anywhere > from a few days to a couple weeks for things to return to normal. Guest guest
Just to let you know, other things can cause elevated liver enzymes. Infection, including parasites, could be one reason. If they don't return to normal within a few days/weeks then ask your doctor for an Ova & Parasite stool test. I had elevated liver enzymes plus elevated eosinophils, and we suspected it was parasites. I chose to take a parasite 'cleanse' concoction of herbs for a few months. I'm also suspicious of l-glutamine I was taking at the time though. So hard to pinpoint these things! Kathttp://scdkat Have you asked your doctor about this? Yep. Guest guest
I don't ever remember them not scoping me because of it though. Just curious why?I guess because they're SO high, and since they knock me out for it, they don't want to tax my liver more by making it deal with all the anesthesia meds.Well I know I have absolutely no advice, just wanted you to know someone else was out there feeling your frustration!!! Guest guest
Lemon juice in water is said to help the liver cleanse. Also beets. I'd go with beet juice if you can tolerate it, or just raw beets. There are some who say to grate beets and marinate them in some olive oil and lemon juice and just eat a spoonful of that, whenever you think of it throughout the day, maybe eating up to a cup a day or so? Also, ginger is liver supportive and cardamom as well. They make a nice tea. Lots and lots of water. And if you can drink the water slightly warm with a pinch of sea salt that's ideal. Good luck! Guest guest
If it's an infection then I would think eosinophils would be elevated too. Ask your doctor if he tested those.I'm not sure if yeast would cause it. A few things I do for liver health: lemon water in the morning, ginger tea during the day, lots of beets, stomach acid supplements (not just digestive enzymes, but Betaine HCL too). Guest guest
You could also try castor packing your liver. That's what my nutritionist has me do when it tests weak. It's pretty easy to do and seemed to really make a difference when I would do it for my liver, kidneys and pancreas (at different times).Good luck!kt> > >> >> > I'm also suspicious of l-glutamine I was taking at the time though. Guest guest
Die off definitely causes it. Had any?'Well, I've been taking boulardii, so I probably have had some. It's a little hard to tell. I will get periodic yeast flare ups though, where my tongue will get white-coated and have sores on it. Then the next day it'll be fine. I took an epsom bath tonight, and I'll do the ginger tea and lemon water tomorrow; hopefully by the time I get my bloodwork retested my liver will be happier! Guest guest
Alyssa, Well, bummer about the liver enzymes! I'm so sorry when here you (not exactly looking forward ) to the colonoscopy at least wanted to get it over and done with. I have no particular suggestions either, except I would say maybe drinking plenty of good clean water, and maybe detox baths? The usual sort of thing to try to help the body get rid of toxins now you are off the meds. Since you are young, this may go a lot faster than it would for some of us older ones. I don't know if candida would do it; since it's listed as a side effect of the Azo, I'd think that might be the most likely. Or else an infection you didn't really know you had. One time I had a routine blood test and my doctor got wildly upset about my platelets being off and he sent me down to a Hematologist to see if dire things were happening. It turned out I'd taken the test when coming down with a cold and that was all it was; a retest was fine. Good luck! I hope it clears really fast. My doctor asked me if I'd been sick, to see if an infection is causing the spike in liver enzymes, but I haven't had any symptoms. I'll remember the parasites, thanks! Do you think a yeast flare-up could cause liver enzyme elevation? Cheers! Alyssa 16 yo
Guest guest
Hi, Alyssa, I'm new to this board, and since I am a severe proof-seeker, am VERY interested in lab results. (See my recent - and first career - post). Re: liver enzymes. I am now certain some so-called healthy and/or benign popular foods are toxic to the liver. You mentioned herbs as a possible cause of transaminitis, and I wouldn't be surprised if you were right. The fundamental principle of the SCD may be quite right, but because we are occasionally posioning ourselves with permissible foods, we begin blaming what might well be innocent by-standers, e.g., simple carbs, thus casting doubt on the SCD foundation, which is no COMPOUNDED carbs. If you have access to lab tests, perhaps you should check some hormonal parameters, since transaminitis (high enzymes) is a risk factor for endocrinological aberrations (menstrual dysfunction, glucose/fructose dysregulation, sexual complaints, intolerance to cold, etc.). . > > > I'm also suspicious of l-glutamine I was taking at the time though. > > So hard to pinpoint these things! > > > L-glutamine DEFINITELY did not agree with my liver. Guest guest
Alyssa can speak for herself but since I saw this first, it is thought that her recent elevation in liver enzymes was due to a medication she was taking and that they seem to have gone down once she stopped it. I'm 16 and I have never once gotten my period. Sounds like an endocrinological aberration to me!
