Diane,

I had ceramic braces on for about a year, which I loved. They were

hardly noticeable in pictures and at a distance. Prior to having

them put on my oral surgeon actually approved me using ceramics

instead of stainless steel. When it came time to schedule my

surgery though, my oral surgeon called and said he wanted to switch

me to stainless steel. Evidently one of his fellow OS' had recently

done a surgery where several of the ceramic brackets fell off, they

had to stop in the middle of the surgery, remove all brackets, and

wire the patient together the way they would if someone broke their

jaw in a car accident. He didn't want to take any chances.

Ultimately I switched to stainless after some serious consideration

and lost several months time in the process waiting to have them

switched, and then the readjustment period. Can you believe when

they went to remove my ceramics they couldn't get them off? They

finally resorted to breaking the majority of them into pieces, and

filing the remainder off my teeth. The few stainless steel brackets

that I did have on my teeth popped off with no problem. Which

sounds stronger to you? I wouldn't worry about ceramic brackets as

long as you have spoken to your OS about them, and as long as he

doesn't change his mind like mine did. I know quite a few people

have successfully had surgeries with them on.

I have ceramic braces too. My orthodontist wasn't too sure about

letting me get those as they take longer to move the teeth.

I'm not sure if it made any difference in my case. I had braces for

12 months and then had surgery 8 days ago. And, no my brackets

didn't come off during the surgery.

Infact, my OS never said anything about me having ceramic vs.

metallic braces.

Pros of ceramic braces are: they are a lot less visible and most

people think I am wearing only retainers on my upper teeth, until

they look reaaaly cloesly.

Cons: the plastic chain wires on mine would catch color everytime I

would have any curries. Yellow teeth look a lot grosser than

mettalic.

Namrita - Thank you for your input about the ceramic braces. I will

be getting my ceramic brackets installed on Tuesday morning, along

with the spacers. Then, on August 9th, I will get the spacers removed

and the bands put on the molars, and the archwires and ligatures put

on too. MY OD is putting the braces on in two steps because I have

jaw joint issues and he doesn't want to keep my mouth open for too

long at one time. He also wants me to ease into the sensation of

having braces in my mouth; I think my OD is such a sweetie for being

so considerate of my needs! As for ceramic braces taking longer to

move the teeth, my OD says my teeth will be in pre-surgery position

in ten months, down from the original twelve months as he had first

thought, so I don't think ceramic vs metal applies in all cases. I'm

just relieved to get the show on the road. Thanks. ~~ Diane
