Guest guest
Tony, We sound so much alike. I have been waiting almost 15 years, since I was 11, to have my surgery done. The time since braces has flown by. I too have 3 children, ages 9, 6, and 3. My surgery date is July 22nd, this Friday, and I will be having lower jaw, called a bilateral saggital split. I too had concerns about breathing right as I am already a mouth breather. Research has brought me to the conclusion that I should actually breathe better with my jaw in the proper position. I was recently told by a friend that her nephew had a similar surgery done to correct sleep apnea and it worked. Hope this helps. Connie > Hey, I'm having my surgery August 9, 2005. I'm anxiously waiting to see what everyone has to say to you, as you've beautifully stated my feelings, too. Hang in there; we'll get through this together. Guest guest
Hi! I am 21 years old and having my surgery August 8th, 1 day before you, so I feel your nervousness! From what I understand, I am having the same procedure with the palate and my top jaw moving up. Nothing with my bottom jaw though... My email address is posted above, and it'd be nice to keep in touch with someone who is going through the same thing at the same time! Let me know how everything is going! Guest guest
- Welcome to this group! It sounds like you have an underbite - I do too. I've been in braces for only the last eight weeks, and I will be having surgery next June to shorten my lower jaw and to advance my upper jaw. It is probably best if you start by making an appointment with an Orthodontist (OD) who has had experience with underbites that require more than just braces to correct. That Orthodontist will then refer you to an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMS). The OD will do his work-up on you which includes xrays, molds, and pictures. After he has studied all that, he will meet with you to discuss a treatment plan which includes braces. He will then refer you to the OMS who will study the xrays, etc. and decide the best procedures that will need to be done based on your particular problems. In my case, I not only have an underbite (Mandibular Hyperplasia) but I also have an underdeveloped upper jaw (Maxillary Hypoplasia). My OMS has decided the best course of action is to perform both lower surgery to set back my mandible and upper surgery to bring my maxilla forward and drop it down in front. The OD you went to said that braces won't be of much help but I bet he meant that braces won't be much help by themselves. I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like you might very well be a surgical candidate. San Francisco has some Dental Schools, such as the University of the Pacific. You might try their clinic - I'm sure they can refer you to someone who can help you. Congratulations on taking the first step by recognizing that you have a problem that you want to get fixed and joining this group to acquire some information about all this. Good luck and let us know what happens. Take care. ~~~~ Diane (Idaho)--- In orthognathicsurgerysupport , " carszeto " <carszeto@y...> wrote: > Hello all, > I'm new to this group. Guest guest
Hiya - Mine is a long story, but one of the problems that I have is from pulling my lower jaw back toward my neck in an incorrect position. Although I was doing it subconsciously, it had started to wear down my TMJ joints, so I would *definately* recommend that you speak to an OMS. I didn't even know that I was supposed to have an " underbite " (where the lower jaw is longer than the upper) until I consulted with mine (and neither did any dentist I had ever seen in my whole life!) Does your jaw(s) pop? That was my first sign, but I didn't think anything about it. I was having *massive* headaches, though, and eventually a general dentist sent me to my OMS. If your general won't send you, and you can't find a OMS to see you without it, I would find a general on my insurance plan that would send me. My journey has been 3.5 years and I will be having surgery on 10/20, so I advise to see someone as soon as you possibly can. Where do you live? Maybe someone reading can refer you to his/her OMS. Hope this helps. Nay > > Hello all, > I'm new to this group. The reason I joined is because I was searching > online for a solution to my seemiingly growing lower jaw.
