Guest guest
, I can only tell you what works for me. Hopefully others can give their input and you can find what works for you. I use protein shakes. I found one I like and I use it as a drug basically. My cravings really are MUCH less than they used to be. 1) get in your water. Sometimes we Think we are hungry but really we are thirsty 2) get in your vitamins. Helps keep things in check 3) get in your protein via shakes for sure and eat sensible small lean protein based meals spaced out 3 to 4 hours. www.vitalady.com has samples for you to try. I particularly like the proscore and stack stuff. If you just can't do shakes, not sure what to tell you . this is honestly how I feel I have control. If I did not have them, I feel like I'd be a basket case with food since I crave carbs. I have 2 a day...sometimes 3 or 4 depending on my cravings. I eat about 5 meals a day. 4) drop your sugars to single digit per meal 5) Get rid of ALL trigger foods. My hubby just bought his last ritz cracker box! LOL... I was doing so well until those /scowl. If chips make you go nuts, get rid of them. I find personally anything white flour based is pretty bad. So cheap or white bread, tortillas, taco shells, chips, pasta, crackers, etc 6) Eat good fats for you. Buy all sorts of nuts and avacado 7) up your veggies and have them as your filler. I wish you luck. You can feel free to email me if you have any questions on any of my points. I am not an expert but I do a ton of reading. The sad thing about nutritionists is they usually just are uneducated about we people who have food issues. What one would give a thin person to eat is vastly different " typically " on some foods on what a person who has a tendency to be overweight would be told. I have met very few that make that distinction. Sherra Guidance > Hi everyone im 2 yrs post-op. I have done so well lost 156lbs woohoo > for me right? Guest guest
Not that it works for everyone, but I will do about anything to remain at the weight I am. Carb cravings DO come back, for most about 2 yrs, for many even sooner. My magic time was 20 months. I'm 9 yrs now I do lots of things to trick my body into letting go of my brain. First, I acknowledge the unreasonable carb cravings as part of my physical disease, and do not feel guilty for HAVING cravings. Then, I take steps to beat back the physical disease. I know I can't get rid of the disease, but I can work toward keeping it in remission. I take lots of protein shakes anyway (have to with my distal RNY), but when the carb monster gets me, I increase those to every 2 hours. No milk, no sugar, no fruit or juice in them. Powder + water I am ultra, ultra careful how many sugar g I am getting in all day for 3 days. NO lil " cheat " here or there, no hidden sugars, no natural sugars and for me, fruit is a trigger food. AN apple is ok, but chop it up and put it in a bowl with other fruit and I'm a Mean Fruit Eating Machine I take Stevia tablets I take Relora They could be placebos. I don't care. As long as I THINK they work, I'm not stopping. One of the side effects of stevia is prevention of gum and tooth issues, so I can win anyway If it gets really bad, I make deals with myself. I can have the _________ (Oreo, Twinkie), but I have to just finish this protein shake first. That works most of the time, since a craving usually only lasts 3 minutes at a time, anyway. And then I have a small success to build upon I know these are all just silly little things, but they work for me. I remember at 4 months out feeling like I had taken dominion over food (vs it owning me) and WOW, was that ever a nice lil high. So, whenever I can, I try to reproduce that feeling. Guest guest
, I am 21 mo post-op and I can tell you what has worked for me so far..may not be the right answer for you but has worked so far for me. I've been at maintenance for several months now. I allow myself a 3 pound window, and weigh daily. Stay within the window and I allow myself small amounts of carb and sugar treats daily-not outrageous amounts, but a fun size candy bar or a mini ice cream bar, or a few mini cookies-something along those lines. I also make sure to eat very well for meals-protein first, veggies, fruits and good carbs. And work out-exercise 3 times a week. If the scale goes over the 3 pound window, which is does about once a month, I add 1 work out session more a week, and cut back on the snacking, or change it to lower cal snacks. Within 3-4 days or so, I'm back in my window. I learned from the get-go that to deny myself my treats only made me miserable, and then guilt ridden when I cheated, which I always ended up doing. Now that I have thrown off the guilt, I 'm a happier person. If I want any food, I will have it, just a few bites though, and it seems to work. The key is moderation. For those that cannot just eat a few mini-cookies or a few bites of dessert or chips, this probably won't help. And I don't tempt things like buying a whole cake (individual slice only).... The protein shakes don't do the trick for me.... Cindy in Va lap RNY 2/8/02 > Hi everyone im 2 yrs post-op. I have done so well lost 156lbs woohoo > for me right? Guest guest
I am very respectful and cautious about herbals and diet " miracles " too. Well, more like skeptical about the diet " miracles " than respectful ... not so much because of metabolic concerns, but more because of threat-to-life concerns. Ref ephedra (ma huang). Not everything is as benign as oregano, right? As to your metabolism: just keep a'flapping your feathers a'runnin' around the coop and you should be A-okay! Put some red chili flakes (is this an herb?) on your chicken-butt and see if that gets ya a'movin! LOL!
