I'm 5'10 " and consider myself to be " tall. " I would NEVER want to be

ANY taller - I have enough trouble as it is finding pants and long sleeves

that fit! My neighbor is 6'0 " and she has an awful time finding clothes. There

is absolutely NOTHING in a department store that will fit her -- okay.. maybe

shorts and underwear!

Another " issue " that I have with being tall is that, being tall, you

just MUST weigh more. I weigh 160 pounds (okay, I'm up four pounds right now -

working on that!). MANY people think of a 160 pound woman as being FAT. If

you described a woman as 160 pounds to a stranger, they would picture someone

who was at minimum, " pudgy. " Being this " big " also translates to larger

clothing sizes. I need a 10 - occasionally a 12. " Double digit " sizes. I have

a

large number of " friends " who feel that double digit sizes are one of the

worse things that can happen to a woman. Of course, these women are 5' nothing,

or maybe a couple of inches taller and WOULD be " fat " in a size 10. I have an

incredible hang up about all of this. I know that it is irrational. I know

that I look good - a doctor even described me as SLENDER one day ... you could

have knocked me over! But I just lust over that size 6 and 130 pound number.

Yep, I know -- they are only numbers, and I would look really bad if I lost

another 30 pounds.

Tall ain't all it's cracked up to be. However, I don't have to ask

for help in stores reaching items on the top shelf! LOL

I think self-perception of height isn't always connected to

reality! I matured early: lost my first tooth at four, hit puberty

at 10 or 11, and was always one of the taller girls through grade

school. But I stopped growing (in height, at least) in about the

sixth grade and am 5'4 " . When I looked up some government

statistics 25 years ago that was the average height for women in

this country, though now I'll bet it's shorter than average. Yet I

never *thought* of myself as short because I was tall as a young

kid, and that self-image stuck. I suspect being fat had a lot to do

with it, too, just the overall feeling of being " big " . Now that I'm

in a normal size range I find myself patronizing the petite

department, and even then I sometimes have to get slacks hemmed. I

still don't *feel* particularly short, but I guess my brain has to

acknowledge that I am.

I am 5 ft 1. Consequently everyone else is tall. It is just a matter of

perspective.

Well, I am 5'1 " . Not TOO many people refer to me as tall. Except maybe

Jelly Bean Toes Tina.

Is that a helpful guideline?

Actually I don't allow the word short in my house. So my step-son (who is

6'4 " ) refers to me as vertically challenged. He is 35 (my husband is MUCH

older then me!) but he well remembers the day when he was 18, and this

vertically challenged woman grabbed him by the collar and put him in a chair

due to his thinking he was going to go out and get into some trouble. I may

be vertically challenged, but I am mighty! As is our VitaMom!

Then there is the other side of the coin. Pre-op at 5'2 " I weighed 260 and

wore a VERY tight 22. Do you realize that clothes manufacturers think all

fat people must be tall? There is no such thing as a petite size 22. Oh the

freedom of being able to buy a size 8 petite and not have to shorten pants

and skirts! LOL

I am 5'2 " and 140 pounds. No one believes I'm 140 pounds--they think I'm

like 125 or in that neighborhood----I think if I got that small I'd look

sick!! I am constantly called tiny (I can't believe this--it still shocks me

when someone refers to me as tiny) I wear a size 12--sometimes 10 pant and

a small or medium top. The issue here is my excess butt and thighs----they

were humongous when I was fat, they are still big in relation to the rest of

me---which is why I have to wear a 12---when my waist would probably fit

into a 10 or even an 8---all of my pants gap really bad in the waist. I

don't plan on having any plastic surgery, although I could certainly use a

TT and a boob lift, I know my insurance wouldn't cover it because my excess

skin isn't that bad comparatively (it's bad to me and I'd love to get rid of

it, but it hasn't really caused me any health issues) and I can't afford to

pay out of pocket---or afford to take the time off work to heal. All in

all, except for the fact that I have no chest left to speak of, I am pretty

darn happy with the way I look---and my new guy thinks I am a

goddess---hanging belly and stretch marks and all---so I have no complaints!

But they also think that all thin people are SHORT! I used to be able

to get away with " almost too short " pants lengths back when I was in 18's and

such on my way down ... but now that I need 10's -- forget it ... the pants

are half way up my shins -- and they aren't meant to be capris!

On the same note though, I was shopping yesterday and wonder of

wonders came across a rack of pants in my favorite store (Kohl's) that had wool

pants in Misses TALL sizes -- and on sale! I was so jazzed...took a pair to the

dressing room, thinking " Great! I will have a nice pair of black pants for the

hoildays! " ...Tried them one...they were huge in the butt and tiny in the waist

and about 6 inches too LONG. I found myself wondering just WHO the heck was

the woman who would fit into these pants!

I don't know WHO clothing manufacturers are using for size models. I am

5'10 " . I cannot find pants that are long enough, nor dresses where the

waistline is not directly under my boobs. I see those clothes on the dummies

in the window. They don't look like THAT on THEM. I want my pants to reach

my shoes, and I don't want every dress I own to look empire style. If it

didn't get so cold here in winter, I'd just go naked. LOL. NOW THAT WOULD BE

I am 5'2 " and 140 also. I am also being called skinny. hmmmmmm nope, I am

not skinny. I am an apple shape. so tho I am wearing an 8 in jeans and

skirts, in the jeans I could wear a 6 for my but and thighs. 8's are baggy

in the non-existent posterior area. I have to search for " classic fit " cause

the relaxed fit look absolutely like I am wearing clown pants! I do want to

get to 130 if for no other reason then to cushion for the " bounce back " . I

too seriously doubt that my crappy insurance will pay for any reconstructive

surgery. I look good dressed. I cry when I see myself without clothes. Even

my face wrinkled all up and sagged! Oh well I feel much better physically

and that IS the reason I did it!

This is the reason that pants are the only thing I can't buy at resale stores.

There is almost no such thing as a long size 6 pant. I don't like to buy clothes

unless they are REALLY cheap - I am weird that way.

I try on all these great clothes at resale and consignment stores, and never can

buy any pants. I have suits, dresses, coats, sweaters, evening wear -- all

bought on the cheap or for nothing at all (due to having credits from my old

stuff selling) but I have to pay full price in the store for pants. Old Navy and

Wal Mart both have pants in short/average/tall, so that works for jeans. But for

dress pants I can wear one brand: Ralph . That's it. I have two pair and

that's all I'm gonna have.

Funny how we have different body types and different images. I'm 5'8 " , 125, wear

a 4 or a 6, but I think I look average. Not fat, but definitely not thin. In

fact I thought I looked thinner at about 150, size 8/10, than I do now. We just

can't see ourselves.

Ann

The sweater I'm wearing today would suit you fine. The sleeves go down to my

knees. sigh

But it's a cute sweater, darn it

All this talk about being tall has brought me out of lurkdom once again. At

a mighty 4'11 AND 1/2, I feel tall now!! At 250 lbs there is no such thing

as size Petite 32. I would have to cut pants off at the knees just to get

them to a decent length. Laine does not carry anything for

vertically challenged big people. Now, I still have to hem things

sometimes, but it's soooooo much easier now to be able to buy something off

the rack. Now, I just feel so much taller for some reason and not many

people even comment any more on how vertically challenged I really am. I

think they used to comment on my being short just to keep from saying how

rolly polly I was. Now, I utilize my height to get me some cute young tall

dudes at the stores to help me get stuff that's too high for me. Hey....at

56, this old lady needs all the strokes I can get!

So there is hope????? LOL I don't feel 48, I feel 20 again and look 60!

*sigh* My only hope is to smile 24/7 cause then the wrinkles go up instead

of down! LOL

Phyllis, my face came back about the same time that my butt did -- at 3

years postop.

Yeah, some people have told me I look taller now. It could be that I wear

heels alot, just cause I can! or it could be that I am no longer was wide as

I was tall. My next purchase???? Horizontal strips! I have never worn them!

Gonna get some tho! LOL
