I am with you on the food related issues, but this one, at least for me, is

a no. I was a football player, tennis player, and general all-round athlete

before I got fat. I still ate like I was playing football, even when I was

sitting behind a desk. Then food began to take over other areas of my

life....without getting too explicit, food replaced all the other spots in

my life where I wasn't getting what I needed. Food was always my friend: I

could count on it making me feel better.

Some friend. Nearly killed me.

I still love food, but have some perspective nowadays.

Hey Vicki - I agree this hormone thing is not for the faint of heart!

About your weight, I'm willing to bet that you look a lot smaller than a

normie who weighs 214. Every one thinks that I weigh a lot less than I do

and I wear 2 sizes smaller than a normie friend of mine who weights 15

pounds less than I do.

So hug yourself, flaunt your skinny-ness and drink your protein!

I have to agree with Joanie. Whenever I tell someone how much I

weigh....they don't believe that I weigh that much. Right now I sit at 193,

but was at 214 for YEARS! No one would ever believe me. I would go to the

Docs and they would put me on the scale and put the little thingy on 150 and

I would move it to 200 and their eyes would bug out of their heads. I would

just say...TRUST ME. Now, I get on the scale and MY eyes bug out of my head!

Thanks Kricket! Helps to be tall. Or as Vitalady says " have LONG legs " !

Kricket, I really LIKE Dr. Isik. He is quiet, and gentle, but the most

PIERCING eyes! It says a lot, I think, that his Nurse has worked for him for

a long time and really likes him, his residents seem relaxed around him (one

I know who is Dr. Risk -- what a name for a Doc--LOL) they come from medical

schools like Harvard to study under him. Even the Anesthesiologists had only

GOOD, kind things to say about him. Some how, I think there is a really good

sense of humor lurking....if one had time to really get to know him. And yes

I am happy with my results! But this darn binding is driving me nuts!!! I am

so tired of stays....they bend...where I don't. LOL I have found that by

wearing jeans I can get the binders to stay put.

This reminds me a bit of my MIL. A few years ago she referred to herself as

" tall. " I said, " How tall are you? " and I said this to the very top of her

head, okay? She answered: " FIVE FEET FOUR INCHES! " rather defiantly. So I

just said " Oh " and blinked a few million times. I wasn't about to disagree

with her, at least not while she was still cranking out those to-die-for

noodle puddings! I'm not stupid.

BTW someone asked for the recipe. I am calling her tomorrow and I will ask,

but I know she doesn't measure LMAO! (I am such a bitch!)

Beth, I'm 5'6 " , but I remember my Mom's best friend, who was all of

5'2 " or so, telling me that tall women are " regal. " Of course, to

her, I was tall. I'm also a size 10/12, and those single digits are

very elusive to me, too, and probably always will be. So, we will

revel in our regalness or regality or whatever the word is! LOL

I don't know where I got this - probably from some fashion magazine article

in my youth, but it has always stuck with me that " short " for women is

under 5'4 " , " average height " is 5'4 " - 5'6 " and over 5'6 " is " tall " . My

5'6 " husband (short for a guy, or at least on the low end of average, IMO)

calls me " shorty " all the time and loves to watch me try to get things down

off high shelves. I always remind him that at 5'5 " I am average height for

a woman and not at all short. Of course, it doesn't help that since my

surgery I've been given everything from 5'4 " to 5'5 " as my height (most

recent measurement is 5'4-3/4 " which is close enough to 5'5 " to make me

claim that :o)

Stature is in the eye of the beholder. Of course if you're under 4'11 " ,

then you are technically considered a " little person " :o)

And not only will it not change, it goes the wrong way as you get

older! I was 5'4 forever until to my surprise, I was 5'3 one day..of

course, the disc removal surgery in my back was the culprit, but

still, I want my average 5'4 back! And to think as I get older, I

could end up even shorter....Petite stores/sizes are perfect now. I

find that in average stores, sleeves are too long, and pants always

have to be hemmed.

Anyone notice that the youngsters today are much taller at much

younger ages? My 8 year old niece reached my mouth height already...

At 5'7 " I have always considered myself average in height, in spite of the

fact that growing up I was ALWAYS the tallest in the class. Was ALWAYS in

the back for pictures. Then I hit the age of 12-13 and that was it. Didn't

grow anymore. I always wished I were as tall as some of my girlfriends who

were 5'10 " ! Such is life. Are we EVER happy with what life has dealt us?

Now, my sister --- also 5'7 " --- and I tease our Mom, who is 5'4 3/4 " , and

says she is NOT short. She is of average height for HER generation! I am

afraid that when we are all together and she says this my sister and I laugh

and say, SURE!!!!! Fortunately, Mom takes the teasing well. She gets even in

other ways. LOL

Same here! I'm 5'6 " and am an inch taller than my oldest brother,

but 9 inches shorter than my other brother. Dad is 6'3 " and Mom is

5' even. As for the average slacks, I have to go to the petite

racks. Some of us just don't have very long legs no matter how tall

we are. My best friend has to get longs and is about the same

height. Funny...before WLS I had to get the average length.

women's size 8 shoe when I was 9, my father was 6'4 " , his mother was

6' and his sister was 5'11 " ....but my mother was 5'3 " . I hit this

height when I was 12 and haven't grown an inch since. I was

disappointed as a teen ager but glad now because it's much easier to

find " average " length slacks.

Dear Beth,

I'm 5'9 " and consider myself on the tall side. I take a 32 " leg in jeans if

I want them to touch the floor (what can I say? I'm stuck in the 60s...

hahahaha). My two sisters are 5'2 " and 5'3 " respectively and are considered

short, and my two brothers are 6'1 " and 6'2 " respectively and are considered

tall. Also, I believe the tall/short thing is gender based, because, if I

was a male, I'd be considered short.

I relate to you because you're where I want to be. I've been told that

160-165 is the perfect range for my height and my doc tells me I'll be

'thin' when I get there. So, I guess it's all relative.

It's interesting what different experiences we all have. There's

sure an amazing variation in body sizes! What really steams me is

that men don't go through these problems as much, because *their*

clothes come in a wider variety of sizes, like inseam lengths from

29 to 36 or something! Yet we women count ourselves lucky if we can

find petite, average, and tall.

Land's End will hem to order, for both men and women, in their

pants. Not the cheapest solution but worth pursuing if you have a

hard time in the stores.

My not-quite-four-year old daughter is very tall (42 " ) and doesn't

consume any commercial dairy products. If it's due to bovine hormones,

it's sneaking into her some other way. And she never had any formula

either, she was breastfed until 25 months. Don't know why she's tall,

she just is. :-)

Yes. In fact, the folks here in the office have talked about it alot

(the ones that have kids). I've heard that it's attributed to the

hormones that are being pumped into cows and the residual effect that it

has on their milk. My 9 y.o. is as tall as some of the boys that I went

to high school with. I don't know if it's true but it sorta makes

Speaking of looking good in clothes:

Went to a PS a few weeks ago to find out what he could do for my bat

wings. After the examination and lots of discussion with the doc

(we started talking from the top to the bottom, LOL) I told him that

I knew that I would never have the 16 yr old hard body, but I sure

would like to look better. That's when his nurse piped up and

said " But you look so good in clothes! " I don't think that she
