I went to my support group the other night where we break down into

subgroups depending how far out you are. One member, at 11 mo post-

op, and looking like she was finished losing, admitted that she

doesn't drink any water (doesn't like it), no protein supplements,

and is not consistent with vitamins. YIKES..so a few of us got on

her about her water with helpful suggestions to carry a bottle around

and she said she doesn't get thirsty so why should she carry water

around. She wasn't even substituting other liquids, other than

coffee. We didn't seem to get thru to her..she was very nonchalant

about it too. This really disturbed me,and I wanted to ask her, why

are you here at this support group if you don't seem to care or

listen to us? Whats the point? But I didn't, just urged her to

drink before she dehydrates and ends up in the hospital. Several

others chimed in too but it didn't seem to make much of an

impression. What would you have done??

Hi Cindy...........

Well this women could be my twin. I to am a very BAD water drinker. I

can't seem to like the taste of it. We have well water. Ewwwwww!!!! I am

2 years out from surgery comming Nov 20th. If i have drank 2 gallons in a

month that would be about it. ((I am ashammed)). I do drink fruit 2/0 but

that's only once in awhile because the flavors leave this icky taste in my

mouth. Coffee is my favorite liquid as well........

I'm another one who does not think that water is something to drink.

My uncle used to say that it would rust your pipes and I believed him

(course, *he* drank vodka only) so I'm a die hard iced tea drinker.

However, my trainer really pounded into my head that I have to drink

water sooooo.....I squeeze some lemon juice into it and guess what?!

Not so bad. You might give that a try, esp. in the summer when we

could dehydrate.

These are the non compliants the docs always worry about, it is almost like

they are trying to spite their parents, in the normal teenage way. However,

like it has been said, some of what they hear eventually sinks in. Since I know

this for a fact, I would have talked about the young woman who had a heart

attack and died at her support meeting, because she became dehydrated. I would

also mention the people here who get infusions for iron (not that the people

here don't take iron), to point out what it is like. But most of all I would

say nothing, if my tone of voice could only be critical.

Boy Cindy,

It is really rough to have been there done that and then see someone fall

into the same traps as you did or what not and not to be interested in

helping themselves out of them. Sometimes I'm good and sometimes I'm not

good with people. It depends on their demeanor. I about lose it when I

visit places like spotlight health and the like. I have YET to get one

measly thing from that site....that I could actually use. I realize I sound

totally selfish now :(. I really get irate when men say in the calcium

threads that women can do just fine in carbonate. Osteoperosis plagues

women badly and adding this tool that we got onto it, it's even worse. I

have to atleast count to 100 before I post, no, you need citrate and this is

why. It's ok I'll find a prostate post and go post my advice in it /evil

grin . Yah that is right, I know exactly how to get rid of hte notion

you'll ever have prostate issues../more evil grins.

I also am more intolerant of stuff if I have been there before and did the

same pitfalls, it is the mothering syndrome. It is what makes the baby

birds fly ya know..momma pushing them out of the nest even if they go smack

on the concrete below lol. I just try to remember that it's just my job to

plant a seed and the only way to plant a seed is to try to do it in a

positive manner and try to relate feelings that they can identify with so

maybe one day when they hit rock bottom, that little lightbulb will go on.

Some days I'm better at this than others. You sound like you did fine

outwardly. Talking to oneself is a good thing during times like these.

I look back at how I saw this group even a year ago. All it was to me was a

bunch of email cluttering up my inbox. Well, I had read stuff on/off.

Seeds were planted. It took a year to grow but if it weren't for those

seeds, I'd be either dead today or back gaining weight with my bad habits

and not at goal. In turn, I now am grateful and I have gotten to know some

of the personalities here and really don't know what I'd do without you. So

think of it that way..we all have to hit our rock bottom and your seed you

never know will sprout one day.

It's even harder when you launch them yourself, from pre-op, THEN watch them

crash 'n burn. Do everything the flip side of how it works.

I take that very personally., Like how could I have made her understand?

Where did I go wrong?

Sigh

Alice,

I am a lemon-in-my-water ALWAYS person since before WLS. I actually

learned to like it in hot water in college to keep me warm at night

w/o caffine. I have to buy lemons at Costco in order to not go in

debt. w/my addiction. I also use it in my tea.

, I think you hit the nail on the head. I took it

personally! I think I border on preachy..Though I did not know this

person before the meeting, I feel some responsibility to try to get

them to understand the importance of doing something right. I'm no

where near as critical if they are cheating with snacks etc, but

something like not drinking water sounds like a medical emergency

about to happen. I'm the same way for taking citrate vs. caltrate

and getting bone scans...

Cindy,

I would have done exactly what you did. Sometimes I get a little

defensive when people are giving constructive criticism. It isn't until

later that I allow the information to sink in and am able to take action.

Hopeful, this woman is the same way. Keep up the good work.

Exactly.

My analogy is that of watching your toddler headed for a busy street. If

you can't catch them to grab their hand, you'd rather knock then down with a

rock throw to the legs than to let 'em hit that busy street. It hurts,

they're mad at you for awhile, but at least they're alive to BE mad at you.

You can see I do this A LOT, lots of people hate the air that I breathe.

Yes I have this problem. Usually it's related to water intake for me.

Sometimes it can be windburn though...

OK here's the known answer. Follow the basics to the letter. We all

know the rules. We have a tool. Don't let it go to waste.

Now for what keeps me on track: Dried prunes.

That's my answer. I eat 4 dried every morning and that keeps me

where I'm at day in and day out.

You know, I think it is the " personality " of this group that makes it so

special. There are many days that I don't read the postings, then there are

days that everything just fits what is going on in my life. Gotta love it.

It's here when you need it and when you don't .... Well, maybe you might

have something to add that will help someone else. And sometimes it is just

a friendly hello or a funny story passed along. Support isn't just how much

protein, calcium, water etc....it is being there even if I/we are doing all

wrong...and not giving up on us.

I am having the same problem. I don't know where you live, but I have this

problem every winter. Here in western NY, between the cold wind outside and

the drying heat inside, my lips and all my skin flakes and cracks all year.

Yes I am bad at getting enough water in and always have been. Prior to WLS I

never took so much as a multi vitamin, much less E. It isn't any worse this

year, but I am trying to up the water to see if it will help. I own about 10

tubes of chapstick, so it is with me no matter where I am! LOL
