Guest guest
Hey Gang, I am coming to you all for some information and help in settling a friendly debate I am having with my co-moderator on several lists in MD. It involves whether Crystal Light is as effective as plain water in the WLS program. I am in the midst of a " Back to Square One " program of low carbs and high protein to lose some of my rebound weight gain but I have hit a plateau for a couple of weeks. I drink 64-80 oz or more of crystal light every day. I hate plain water and don't drink any carbonated beverages. , my co-moderator claims I need to drink pure water and I will lose weight. We are calling on our Grad List friends to set us straight....Water or Crystal Light? I will listen to you all...unless someone recommends buying a cat. Guest guest
Cats are free to a good home, ya know? And some might pay us to own YOU. I usta say if it's wet, it works. Then if it's decaf it works. After getting to know a coupla urologists way too well, I'd say you might give water the 3 day try out. Since there are other things in Crystal Light (which I find harmless), the kidneys still have to SORT things out to get the water. So, it makes a lil extra effort there. 3 days. Come on. How bad can it be? Thanks, Vitalady, Inc. T www.vitalady.com If you are interested in PayPal, please click here: https://www.paypal.com/affil/pal=orders%40vitalady.com Water Vs. Guest guest
I think it comes down to what does " effective " mean. Does it count towards the water intake? yup. Does the liver have to do tons of extra work to sift through the additives? Well I do not know exactly how much work it takes for it to sift through the colorings and additives of crystal lite vs a steak but yes it will do some extra work. How does that affect weight loss, I'm not sure but I'd think the argument is splitting hairs. I am using up the dark crystal light stuff right now and not buying it again since I found out that the dark colorings can contribute to kidney stones. I have no insurance right now till I find a job, so I am not chancing a thing. That is prolly why I've been wanting to do my part, everything perfect for my body because I just can't afford to fail or have anything go wrong atm LOL. I don't see anywhere really on the label that there are carbs or sodium or anything to really worry about. I seriously doubt it would stall weight loss. I think our bodies HAVE to stall sometimes..it's just a normal thing. It amuses me now that I do not lose weight on the days I have eat less when I had the opposite problem before. I am not a hard core crystal lite user though, it's too sweet for me so I prolly have a glass or two ever two days. It's quite possible that it is setting your taste buds up for sweetness so you would be tempted to maybe have a taste for something not so good for you, I could be wrong. My diet is bland and I notice if I have sweet stuff, my tastes will change. Sherra Water Vs. Guest guest
Gosh Dave.. Your reaction to Bobs post is a tad excessive isnt it? ( " dumb down " etc. etc. ??) Relax.. The key phrase in his post was " FRIENDLY debate " . Bob and I, (yes, I am the he spoke of) are very close friends and this really started as tongue-in-cheek, good natured banter between friends. The fact is there probably is no right answer and there is probably no harm in the Crystal Light (although I'll never admit that to the cat hater) and yes the other posts about filtering out the other stuff etc. were also correct. and as said.. what can it hurt to try three days? He's doing everything right. My theory is that if it isn't working for you.. change it. Sometimes you have to shake up your routine a bit to get things moving again. Guest guest
Oh this is going to drive everyone baaaaazonkers, but here goes: (remember I am just the messenger!) Some months ago Dr. Herron (then at Mt. Sinai) was leading a support group meeting whose topic was potential post-surgical complications. Well, as the discussion was ongoing many people were concerned with rebound weight gain. Dr. Herron told a story about a patient (I think she was in CA) who had inexplicably started to regain weight, whose diet was then closely monitored (which revealed she was right on point), and whose weight gain was therefore mystifying. Everything internal was okay too. But one thing became apparent: she did consume ALOT of artificial sweeteners, in various forms. So it was suggested she ditch them, and when she did, weight loss ensued and she was back on track. Upon hearing this, everyone at the meeting grumbled and went " HUH?!?!?! " -- but that was ONE person's apparent experience. I am sure VERY anomalous. Dr. Herron theorized she had some kind of strange " allergy " (my word) to AS's. ?????????????????????????? This comforted NO ONE! LOL! Having said all that, I seriously doubt it's Crystal Light which is causing your plateau. Those damn things rear their evil little heads without a whole lot of help from anything exogenous anyway, and despite our very best efforts. BUT, try replacing the CL with plain water for a few days and see que pasas. Wouldn't hurt to crank up your exercise routine just a tad too. As far as dehydration goes, I think I heard about recent studies which indicated that anything non-caffeinated non-alcoholic is appropriately countable towards recommended daily FLUID consumption requirements (some doctors says need to do half water, half other, but that appears to be unfounded. I think this theory is a bow to urologists who for years have been screeching about certain artificial sweeteners and bladder cancer). Alot of the constipation misery experienced by some WLS people could probably be attributed to insufficient FLUID consumption, not specifically water consumption. So if it takes Crystal Light to keep you going, go for it! LOL! Good luck! Guest guest
>>>Oh this is going to drive everyone baaaaazonkers Oooooo Lucille you went and threw a monkey wrench into the works! Actually I have read the same thing about artificial sweeteners as well as sugar alcohol's. I have another friend who hit a plateau and found that they were eating a LARGE amount of sugar alcohol's and although I have read that this usually causes diarrhea, it seemed to be the factor in them not losing weight. >>Alot of the constipation misery experienced by some WLS people could probably >>be attributed to insufficient FLUID .. Guest guest
If clear water made you lose weight.............we could start a new " water diet " program and make millions!!!! She's obviously doing the " dumb down " fear approach to weight loss that certain medical people think fat or formerly fat people fall for. Does she somehow think that Crystal Light " leeches " the water out of water???? Drink your Crystal Light, go forth and live a rich and rewarding life. It ain't Crystal Light that's packing the weight on. I wonder if you came across someone who had been wandering in the desert without water for a few days.......do you think Crystal Light would help them survive dehydration? I think so. Do you think they'd say, " No, I'd like some Perrier, please? " I don't think so. Tired of weird information for fat people...... in Austin RNY April 1998 Water Vs. Guest guest
Ya know, I never thought of doing that. I don't do water, either. I go on certain " binges " with certain types of fluids, get really tired of them (can't stand Crystal Lite or SF Tang anymore), then change to something else until I'm sick of that. I'm also rarely thirsty, and 32 oz. a day is really good for me and, even that, is something rarely acheived. Right now, my drink of choice is diet Snapple iced tea. I'm now 4 pounds over the high end of my 5-pound fluctuation range, and it's scaring me. Once again, thanks you, , for a great idea! in NJ ***************** > > > I usta say if it's wet, it works. Guest guest
In my world, anything with a water base (crystal lite, tea, coffee, etc.) is the same as water. Plus I drink lots of Diet Snapple. I rarely drink plain water, it doesn't taste good to me. I even count protein shakes and milk as part of my daily fluid requirement, as well as diet sodas. I dont know about anyone else, but it works for me. My personal test for whether I'm getting enough fluids is the color of my urine. It should be clear. When it's dark I know I need to be drinking more. Guest guest
There is precisely 1 gram of carbs per an 8 ounce glass of Crystal Lite and that is probably from the artificial sweetner. You would get the same effect if you put lemon and a packet of sweetner in water. Personally, I drink Crystal Lite and count it as water. My major criteria for eliminating a drink is whether it has caffeine in it or not. If it has caffeine, I only count it as half (an 8 ounce serving would only count as 4 ounces toward my water.) JMHO. Guest guest
Well, I know I was told to drink pure water too and I hate the stuff. Still, I do 100 oz a day -- more if I drink any caffeine, to offset the dehydrating effects. I did go thru a spell where I did about half my 100 oz as weak crystal lite --about twice as much water as directions say. But even that caused an acidic condition that was distinctly uncomfortable, so I just do the crystal lite as a rare treat now. I drink a minimum of 100 oz PLAIN water every day, and my urine is NEVER clear. Not dark, exactly, but not clear, for sure. Carol A
Guest guest
I never could take Crystal Light, even before surgery. Always got crampy and, well, you know the rest. My body never could deal with aspartame, NutraSweet, Sugar Twin, etc. Thank God for Splenda. I got tired of just drinking plain water and about a year ago starting drinking Fruit 2-0 water. It is sweetened with Splenda, no calories, carbs, etc, just flavored water. Comes in all kinds of flavors and my favorite is Berry Relaxing and the Cherry. Thought this might help.
