Anybody tried prescription drugs for yeast/candida? Is it a good idea? I need to

do something fast and am considering drugs besides the " SCD yeast protocol " .

Thanks/Gitte

I think s. boulardii helps a lot.

Haven't tried prescription drugs so can't compare but OTC stuff like candidase

is only somewhat helpful. And causes lots of ongoing die off.

I have used Nystation for myself and now I am currently using for my son. I

think it gets you quicker results, BUT you must adhere to either SCD or the

anti-candida diet. I made the mistake of letting my son eat wheat/corn too

soon after the treatment (he only had mild yeast and no IBD'S) . That causes

candida to come back with a roar and might be even harder to kill of the 2nd

time around. See what others say.

SCD - 4 1/2

CD - 5yrs.

My doctor was quite insistent that I probably have/had candida and so

earlier in the year I gave in and took Diflucan for four months. I must

say, I was pleasantly surprised to find he was right when he predicted I

would have no die-off and no side-effects from it. I am about to

start working into s boulardii, though, and other natural things to see

if I have some left, because I was to have followed the Diflucan with

Nystatin, but I seemed to be downright allergic to that one. After

I thought about it for awhile, the reason I agreed to the drug is that I

thought it might jump-start me as far as getting rid of the yeast.

Remember, Elaine said to take drugs when we need them. I think in

your shoes, you might think of whether you need -- or want -- to hit it

faster with drugs or the more natural things but they'd probably be

slower.

I;ve been on Nystatin, ketoconazole, and fluconazole for various

periods of time, sometimes for years. It always seemed like the drug

would help for a period of time and then lose effectiveness but they

certainly helped at the time. I was told by one specialist that

antifungals just select for resilient strains and I would be best to

stop taking them so the yeast would revert to a less resilient form so

I'd avoid taking them for long periods of time; I don't think long

term use has really been the best course for me, but its a bit late

now.

Have you tried echinacea? I've seen studies that show it increases

the effectiveness of anti-fungal drugs, if you decide to go that

route.

Thanks for all answers! I think I'll have to try the " jump-start " method as

well. I'm realizing that a huge yeast problem is holding me back and making me

sick all the time. I've been on SCD for 3½ years and am currently somewhere

between (Pecanbread) stage 2 and 3 (mostly 2). After a chemo therapy for cancer

my immune system is probably not able to fight the yeast anymore, so I get huge

flares every other week. Really a shame since there could be some benefit for my

CD with a weaker immune system...... So I'll do the protocol and think I'll add

the drugs, if my doc will let me. Will be weird since I haven't asked for a drug

in 30 years :-)

It's kind of interesting because I thought I'd overcome my yeast issues

after around 4-5 years on SCD, since I mostly do a lower carb diet any

way.

Because of a supplement which I must take for muscle spasm (my

alternative is codeine!) which contains illegals, my healing was, as

Elaine predicted when I discussed it with her, slower than many

people.

So, I decided to try some s. boulardii.

In the usual way of things, because my weight is significantly higher

than normal, for me, starting with the " normal " dose of

anything is starting with a low dose. So, I took the recommended dose

around bed time, and woke up feeling as if I'd been beaten with an ugly

stick. Die-off. Profound die-off!

I had to back off on the dosage, and build up gradually to the standard

dose.

I have to say that the s. boulardii has been a major help.

Do you think taking a full SB capsule is too much for me? I weigh about 93

pounds. If so, how would I go about splitting the capsule- do you just buy the

empties and pour them in that? Or is there a way to take it where I could dump

half of one into some food?

My yeast issue isn't awful, but I sense that it's keeping me from progressing

too. I also bought some OOO (Oreganol). How much is a good dose to start with?

And what about the grapefruit seed extract? How much would I start with that?

Sorry- I know we've covered yeast stuff a lot, but now that I am getting ready

to take it, I am coming up with some questions specific to my own dosage, etc.

(so typical, right? :)

Thanks!

I recently started taking s boulardii, and a full capsule was

definitely too much for me.  It made me very bloated, so uncomfortable I couldn’t

fall asleep at night.  I don’t know that the dose is tied to weight as

much as just the mix of bacteria/yeast that is in your gut at the time you are

taking the s boulardii.  You may be able to tolerate a full dose right off the

bat, even given your low weight.

After realizing the full capsule was too much for me, I tried a

half capsule, which was also too much for me.  I had to drop down to  ¼ capsule

to start, and I have worked up to half a capsule now.

I just dumped the extra s boulardii from the capsule, but you

have given me an idea of how to use half sprinkled over food and save the other

half for the next dose.  I hadn’t thought of that, so I’ll have to

give that a try.

As for the OoO and grapefruit seed extract, my opinion would be

to completely introduce the full dose of s boulardii and be on it for a week before

introducing one of the other anti-fungals.  Then, pick one and completely

introduce it for a week.  Reevaluate if you think you need to add a third

anti-fungal or not.  If so, wait one week in before introducing the new

anti-fungal.

It's the item itself which is SCD illegal. I get it without any fillers

and such, which helps. But the product itself is an issue. As I said, I

discussed it with Elaine, because between 1982 and 1988, I came close to

becoming a prescription codeine addict, as well as being totally

brain-dead from the stuff. This supplement allowed me to drop the use of

the codeine cold turkey, and I've never touched it since. We agreed that

it fell under the heading of " necessary medicine, " though she

cautioned me that with approximately 10 grams of illegal on a daily

basis, it would take quite a bit longer to starve out the bad bugs... and

she was right.

Mara, thanks for pointing this out to me.  I have been taking s

boulardii right after lunch, so I will have to find a different time to take it

and see if I notice any difference in the way it works.

Are there any preferred times to take acidophilus?  I have been taking

that at the end of lunch.

Thanks,

Hi -

I just wanted to post some info from GIPro Health regarding the S. Boulardii...

-Take in between meals

-If taking anti-fungals, take 1 hour before and 2 hours after anti-fungal agent

-You can take 250-1000mg 1-4x daily

-You can take it for 3-4 weeks (some Crohn's cases have been noted where the

patients took it for 6 months with no side effects).

As for the acidophilus...

Do you eat SCD Yogurt? Eileen gave me a great tip to just pour the capsule right

into your yogurt and mix it up. It works great! And you can control how much you

want to take.

Thanks for your input Eileen and !

I am leaving for a vacation on Saturday, so when I get back I am going to start

experimenting with the S. Bourlardii.

- I will definitely see how this goes before rotating to a new antifungal.

Best,
