To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Sun, July 18, 2010 9:09:27 AMSubject: Preparing for my biggest SCD challenge ever !!Hi guys !Oki, so I'll be leaving august 19th for a 6 weeks trip in China and Mongolia. First 2 weeks will be in Beijing, mostly in a hotel for a conference, then 4 weeks backpacking in Mongolia and South China. Alhtough I'm super duper excited about this trip, I'm also terrified about having a big flare which would spoiled my vacations. So I'm trying to prepare as much as I can for this.I already read the post on this group about backpacking/travelling, took all the advices I could from Kat, ordered S. boulardtii, eating loads of yogourt. I don't have any

big Cronh's symptoms right now but i would say I'm "fragile". I would like your input on those questions though :- What do you think about vaccination ? Hepatitis A, rabies, tetanos, etc..- Would you take the malaria drugs ?- Does anybody had experience with Dukoral, that oral vaccine against traveller's diarrhea ? I don't know if I should take it. They say it can protect me from traveller's diarrhea for about 30%. I fear more diarrhea than taking the vaccine...- If I have diarrhea in China or Mongolia, should I take antibiotics (Cipro) ? What else could I do ?I will try to stick to SCD as much as I can. I will have some camping equipment like little burner and pans, and I will buy stuffs in markets, be careful with water, etc... But in Mongolia backcountry, without being able to speak a word and camping far from the cities, I don't know if I will have a lot of choices in front of me :S Beside, the space in my 52 liters

backpack will be quite limited to bring tons of cans/vegetables...That's adventure !! If I survive this, I'll tell you how it went :)Annie------------------------------------

I have no advice on the vaccines, I just want to say that I think you are so

brave and I envy your adventure! This is what life is all about and this is why

we are all doing SCD. I hope you have an amazing trip!!!

Here's a health advisory from the Center for Disease Control for travel to Mongolia and the recommended vaccinations. They have a great site for any type of travel health issues, BTW.

Re Hep A and B. My GI doctor recommended I get these anyway, even without travelling. Hep A is two vaccines a month apart. Hep B is a 3 vaccines. Two a month apart, and one six months from the first one. So, I'd talk to a doctor.  Maybe if you start the first two, you'll have some immunity.

Have a wonderful trip. It sounds like a great adventure.--

Actually, here is the vaccine info for Hep A and B discussing the timing, as I may have not had it right.--

Thanks Joanna, that's really sweet :)There is probably a part of craziness in

this whole thing, but who's not a bit crazy after all ?

There is no way I will let my digestive problems or my diet drop down my dreams.

yep. you really, really, really don't want this.

this is fairly common place, even here, so why not?

take them before hand or take them with you? you really don't want

malaria messing you up for the next few decades - so, depending on

least bring them. How much of a risk is it in Mongolia?

Have you ever gotten symptomatic from antibiotics?

If not, take them with you.

Be really careful. I don't know how much foreign travel you've done, but I did

quite a bit

before I was diagnosed - though not to Mongolia. The thing is you are just

going to be

more susceptible to foreign bacteria/pathogens than people without a compromised

immune system.

The reason i'm asking about vaccine is because there is some people that thinks

that vaccination might be related to auto-immune disease. In France, they

observed an exponential increase in multiple sclerosis and arthritis right after

a massive hepatitis vaccination program in the country.

I was already protected against Hep B, so I took Hep A and a few others.

There is no risk of Malaria in Mongolia. But I will be 2 weeks in south China,

which is prone to it. I guess I will bring the drugs with me, like you said.

I almost never took antibiotics in my life (maybe once a few years ago - I don't

remember reacting badly to it). It's just that I don't want to mess up my gut

ecology for which I'm working so hard to reequilibrate with SCD... I guess it's

the risk to take when you travel like that. I'll probably restart SCD from intro

as soon as I get back !

Thanks Mara for your input, and yes, I'll be very careful :)

Annie - I can't wait to hear how everything goes when you get back because China

and Mongolia are two places I haven't yet visited and I REALLY want to go! I

just wanted to recommend you get the vaccinations and take the malaria meds.

Don't just take them with you because you need to get them into your system

before you actually get to the area. When I was living in South Africa I had a

teacher go on a quick trip to Zimbabwe for a few days, she didn't take the

malaria meds and now has to deal with it the rest of her life. You don't want

that to happen. I've taken it on several trips and it's never given me a

problem (thank goodness!!). The only time I haven't gotten the vaccines was

when I wasn't allowed to get the yellow fever one (for going to French Guiana)

since I was on prednisone at the time. You want to come back with goo souvenirs

from your trip, not an illness.

Take probiotics with you!!!! Maybe in Mongolia food will have less contaminants and you might feel ok. And good luck! Annie,

I would recommend that you check with the Public Health Clinic. They are

always up on the vaccinations needed for various countries. Of course you

will make your own decisions here. But some vaccinations need time

and I would check on this before you decide to just take it with you

" in case " . By the time you need it, might be too late for

the vaccine to help. And there are some diseases we just do NOT

want to catch, let's face it.

When we went to central America decades ago, my Naturpath suggested I

take plenty of HCl with each meal, to have plenty of acid to kill bad

bugs that I might ingest. So that might be an idea, too, and I

would take tons of pro-biotics with me if I were you.

Good luck, it's a hard decision here to find out what you really need to

take and what is probably OK.

Hope the trip is fabulous!

The reason i'm asking about vaccine is because there is some people

that thinks that vaccination might be related to auto-immune disease. In

arthritis right after a massive hepatitis vaccination program in the
