You may THINK you're getting 1500 mg of calcium, but you may only be getting about 1/4 that much. If the label says 1500mg of calcium citrate, then about 3/4 of those mg's are citrate and about 1/4 are pure (elemental) calcium. For example, I take TwinLab calcium citrate with magnesium. To get 1500mg of elemental calcium, I have to take TEN capsules a day. And if you've got a product that says you are getting 500mg pure calcium in ONE tablet or capsule, the label is just plain wrong. There ARE a few products like that out there. To get that much pure calcium in one capsule, it would be way too big to swallow............... If you need specifics, advise me EXACTLY the wording on the label from your supplement; I'll try to help you interpret it. Carol A
Guest guest
I'm getting the same response from my PCP but I'm a bit older than you are and have had a hystie. I do 2000 mg. calc and weight bearing exercise (when I don't have Charcot foot, that is) and I'm still losing bone. I'm not happy by his attitude but don't know what to do about it. I know that I should not have to resolve myself to becoming hunched over just because I'm old(er) but if you can't get your doc to help out what can you do? Other than switch docs and we just don't have a wide selection in our small town that our insurance covers. If you find a solution please let me know, meanwhile we can only up our calc. and exercise I guess. Alice The Loon RNY 12/28/00 > I just had my third Dexa Scan since my surgery in Aug 2000. Although I am still in " normal " range, each scans scores has decreased a little bit. I asked my primary doc about that today and his explanation is that I am 50 yrs old. (Not menopausal yet, but in his opinion close enough.) His point is that being pre-menapausal, my bone density is going to naturally decrease each year. > Is this correct? I take plenty of calcium citrate. I exercise consistently. Am I doomed to bone loss simply because of age? Or should I be upping my calcium even more? I currently take a minimum of 1500 mg calcium citrate(plus mag, and vit D) per day, some days more. > > Chrissie > shihtzumom@s... > http://users.snip.net/~shihtzumom > My WLS Journey: http://millennium.fortunecity.com/doddington/691/WLS/this_is_me.htm > >
