Hi Ellen,

Sounds like a great day in NYC ;-).  We have talked about this before.  The subject comes up around Hurricane season for some reason and during bad weather elsewhere.  Would be nice for instance to donate food and be able to write SCD on it so another family could have that instead of the usual fare they serve.

Gay keeps a list of a lot of people all over, parents, doctors, volunteers, etc. at scd.net.

Marilyn can speak to it from there (and the other moderators) but you reminded me of something.  I recently bought two Bubba Keg's at the store.  I've mentioned these before--just love them.  One was not what I had in mind because it has a screw top that locks into place.  I got it for the amount it holds and the top handle.  Very handy.  They are on Amazon and probably at camping stores.  Probably wouldn't want to carry that for 2 hours in a parade though.  Just FYI for trips, work, etc.

I think it's a great idea to have families wherever you go, nice to know yogurt is waiting at the other end ;-).

Hello friends-I just had a trip into NYC today - to march in the pride parade! It was fantastic, but of course my stomach didn't fare too well. Anything that is anything out of the ordinary gives me crazy bloating and cramping and dehydration. Anyways, I did bring lots and lots of food - I was marching with it for two hours! But with the icky stomach problems, I was dying for some delish chicken soup. Or some electrolyte drink. I thought how GREAT would it be if I could call an SCDer and get some homecooked meal that I didn't carry with me for the past 8 hours....instead I headed home, icky tummy and all.

But how great would it be if I did have someone to call? Who would have something in their freezer they could just heat up for me? And then I thought of all the families who have tons of stress and planning traveling to a new city, having to bring all this food, and decide where to go to a restaurant, and if it really is worth the risk, not being 100% sure of what is in the meal. What if there was an SCDer in that city that they could trust 100% what was in the food, and offer a meal to that family and give them a couple stress-free hours. So, what I'm suggesting is that there could be volunteers in different cities, states, etc. that we could go to in an emergency whether it be on vacation, or if we're having a really rough day...and get a stress-free homecooked meal.

Someone probably has thought of this before, but I think it really should happen! A moderator could be in charge of collecting the names of volunteers and an ongoing list could be sent out to all the members.Brilliant, right?!?

Cheers!Ellen

Ellen,

Gay does the SCD pals, but perhaps she could post a copy of her list to

our library.

We also have a map on the site where people can log their locations,

though we don't have many people who have yet chosen to sign up for

it.

I've done this on a one-by-one basis when traveling -- in 2002, UK SCDers

helped out with food, and the Irish friend I was staying with south of

Dublin gave me free reign in her kitchen.

When I went to Calgary, AB in 2004, an SCDer offered me her spare

bedroom, and I had an SCD place to stay while researching -- and she sent

me off with food I could re-heat when I was spending the weekends in the

mountains. It was great!

In 2005, when we evacuated for Hurricane Katrina, I ended up leaving all

my SCD food behind. A friend in Baton Rouge helped me re-work my

travel-stuff before we went off to the conference we'd planned to go to,

and then another friend in Birmingham gave us a place to stay for the

five weeks before we could come back to New Orleans. He let me have free

reign in his kitchen, too, claiming that as a bachelor, he needed a break

from cooking.

In 2007, when I spent about three weeks a-wandering, my sister, and my

SCD mentor teamed up to restock me with yogurt and stuff during my

travels.

In 2008, for a Hurricane Gustav evacuation, some friends lent us a spare

bedroom and part of their kitchen.

In 2009, I went up to the Historical Novelists Society Conference in

Chicago, and yeah, it was tricky taking all my food, but I was able to

restock, visiting friends in Milwaukee before we came back.

This year, I haven't gone traveling at all, and I'm praying for Fish

Storms (hurricanes that go up the middle of the Atlantic and don't bother

anyone except the fish!)

I did buy a lottery ticket last week, but didn't win -- I want to build

an SCD-friendly motel and restaurant!

I think it is a Brilliant Idea and I don't even live in the US!

Hope you all get it going and maybe it will move world-wide one day.

Best of luck

Anne-Marie,

Well, obviously, you need to start it Down Under, so that when I get a

chance to come there to research, I don't have to worry!

Absolutely - look forward to cooking SCD for you! I might even know not to

puree the chicken in the Intro soup by then!!!! It was not nice :-(

AM from OZ :-)

15 months IBS

Day 9 SCD

ps Today I learnt to first research any change I make to what I am eating -

carrot and apple juice this morning, half and half with water - not a good idea.

With research on our site, I will now dilute it 500% and my tummy will thank me

for it.

I think this is a great idea. It would help with people who travel and need

yogurt while they are away too.

Well, look at it this way.... after I had my uterine cancer surgery, I

had to do thick liquids for a couple of days. I'd prepared for that event

by doing exactly what you did by accident: pureeing the meat and veggies

and broth together. I will state that after two days of nothing by mouth

and then clear liquids only, that the " chicken glop " tasted

WONDERFUL! So it's all a matter of perception!

Not sure what will come of this, but I should probably mention that I live in Las Vegas - a pretty popular vacation spot. :) So if any of you plan on visiting, let me know and I can give you my contact info in case you need it.

Heh. Well, there's a science fiction convention RENOvation in Reno in the

next year or so. And my sister's north of Salt Lake City. There's a

chance I'll be traveling that way in the next year or so.
