Guest guest
Gurgling is an indication that peristalsis is taking place within the digestive tract. It is usually a normal sound. I have poor digestive motility, so I am very happy to hear bowel sounds such as gurgling, as it doesn't occur very often in my case! However if gurgling is accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea, then it is an indication of several possible things, not necessarily bad, just a sign to pay attention to what foods, drinks and supplements are being consumed. Increased peristalsis can occur to indicate a sensitivity to a food; usually something high-fat or high-fiber, too much seasonings or too hot a spice, but it could also be any other type of sensitivity. If your son is in his early months on SCD, you can expect a lot more sensitivity to foods than usual, so it helps to stick to soft, easy-to-digest foods to give his digestion an easier time of it. The body is trying to rush the offending item through the digestive tract to eliminate it; and this usually can trigger a bout of diarrhea within a short time. Supplements or medications, including beneficial bacteria, can also trigger this kind of response. Keeping a food and supplement diary will help. You can narrow down the possibilities and test them to learn what might be triggering the reaction. Yogurt or an L. Acidophilus supplement will help improve overall gut ecology, so you could try a small amount every once in a while to see if he will tolerate it. The beneficial bacteria can't help but work wonders, but it can take months before our bodies accept it. Kim M. SCD 6 years > > My son is still having a lot of gurggling. Could the gurggling be BECAUSE he has NOT yet introduced the yogurt? Have you tried pepto bismal and/or activated charcoal for the gurgling. It's hard to know what the gurgling is from specifically without a whole lot more info - and even then it would just be guessing. But it is some sort of dysbacteriosis. Guest guest
I am a gurggler too! Sometimes it's so bad that my husband thinks it's saying actual words While sometimes I think it's completely random, I have been able to pinpoint a few things: 1. It's worse in the morning- I think either do to digesting my cup of yogurt that I eat everyday or just the fact that my bowels are most active when I wake up. 2. It's worse when I eat fatty meals- I think fat digestion is tough in the beginning and I notice that if I eat a lean meat like buffalo there's no gurggling, but a fatty meat like ribs will set it off immediately. I hope this gives you insight! -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 30mg Prednisone > > > > My son is still having a lot of gurggling. Guest guest
Joanna- His gurgling progresses as the day goes on so that by evening I hear him a good bitJ. He has been eating steak and recently pulled pork which might be causing it due to the fat content. He is 18 and trying to put on weight…which BTW, he gained 3 lbs. last week…quite happy about that! He wants to do the intro diet again because of the gurgling but I’m not sure that is necessary. His frequency of stools has not increased with the gurgling episose and he has no other negative issues…just the liquid stool yesterday and today. Do you think a return to intro is needed? Guest guest
I'm not sure what the right answer is! I suppose if he really wants to nail down a culprit, doing the intro would really rule some stuff out- that is, if he does the intro and doesn't have gurgling. Then he would know that it is one of the added foods causing the noise. However, if he still has gurgling with the intro than you're really gotta wonder what causes this change? I can totally understand why he would want to figure it out- it can be embarrassing. I remember some really awkward moments in college when a huge auditorium would be silent... except for my stomach... <major blush>. Let me/us know if you find something out! -Joanna > > > > > > My son is still having a lot of gurggling. Last week he had one day > without it and we can't pinpoint why based on his food intake.
