Guest guest
Elaine said that the tiny amount of dextrose in regular salt is fine. Her priority was that we need to be sure to use iodized salt. I use Hain iodized sea salt. patti Salt? Does it matter what salt you use? I see that the regular salt has Dextrose? Should I switch to Sea Salt?
Guest guest
> I happened to glance over at my salt (morton table salt) only to find that it has dextrose in it! > Amber Hey Amber- Elaine actually felt that the small amount of dextrose in table salt was negligible compared to the benefits of getting the added iodine. You can also use sea salt, but since it doesn't have iodine, it would be good to use table salt once in a while. -Joanna SCD 9/2009, Crohn's 1992, 22.5mg Prednisone
Guest guest
Hi Amber, Elaine OK'd table salt because of the iodine in it. Did you eat a lot of it? You have not done anything wrong. How long have you been on SCD? I use sea salt but also occasionally table salt for the iodine. PJ > > Hey guys, > I've been having a major flare for the last week, and I happened to glance over at my salt (morton table salt) only to find that it has dextrose in it! I ran out of my organic salt last week and had to use regular, I can't believe this has been the cause of all my problems. Guest guest
I've only been on the SCD for about 2 and a half months, so maybe the reason for the flare is actually because of the three month flare? I just know nothing else has changed other than the salt, but its good to know I don't have to worry about it! I did go get some sea salt today just in case though > > > > Hey guys, > > I've been having a major flare for the last week, and I happened to glance over at my salt (morton table salt) only to find that it has dextrose in it! Guest guest
Amber- I had some difficulty at 3 months too. Just drop back to intro/ stage 1 easy to digest foods and stick to SCD. Hopefully things will improve soon. I did go get some sea salt today just in case though :)Well, I mean, even legal things can give people reactions! I would do further testing to see if it really is the salt, and if it is, don't eat it! Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's okay with your body. You could take it out and see if your flare goes away, and if it does, add it back again to see if the flare comes back. That would be pretty decisive =) Cheers!Alyssa 16 yo UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Azathioprine 75 mg 1x per dayPrednisone 12.5 mg 1x per day (trying to wean!!!!) Guest guest
I have ingested table salt and had a reaction to the so-called tiny amount of dextrose. I think you should stick to sea salt and assume you can't tolerate the other. I even bring sea salt with me to restaurants rather than risk it. fi
Guest guest
And if it is, you might want to get some iodine drops. Iodine is very important for proper thyroid function. Guest guest
some sea salt has dextrose too, be careful and the ones that don't usually have no iodine which you need - don't want to mess up your thyroid with lack of iodine eileen 2 1/2 years scd > > I have ingested table salt and had a reaction to the so-called tiny > amount of dextrose. Guest guest
I have done some testing, I switched out my salt and decided to stay away from almonds for a while. I seem to digest pecan butter and coconut flour a lot easier, which is odd because coconut is supposed to be very advanced! > > > > I just know nothing else has changed other than the salt, but its > > good to know I don't have to worry about it! Guest guest
Yes, Morton Iodized salt is OK even if it contains dextrose. Elaine felt that obtaining the iodine was more important than the slight risk that the tiny amount of dextrose in salt would provide. The calcium silicate dextrose is required to bind the iodine to the salt. There are several varieties of sea salt that also contain iodine, if you decide to give another option a try. Kim M. Guest guest
Found salt with iodine and no dextrose:salt, sodium silicoaluminate, sodium thiosulfate, potassium iodide.I didn't find those ingredients on the legal/illegal list. Guest guest
Hmmm, looks like this manufacturer still needed to use something to bind the iodine to the salt crystals, therefore the sodium thiosulfate (I think). These additives aren’t illegal on SCD, but my personal choice would be to avoid them as I do as many other synthetic chemicals. I try to avoid aluminum in supplements and medications as much as I can; the sodium silicoaluminate is used as an anti-caking agent. My choice has been to use Celtic gray sea salt most of the time; Morton’s iodized salt (with dextrose) some of the time; Kosher salt for baking; and also supplement liquid iodine in a very low dose (1 drop per week). But that’s me. The salt you found isn’t strictly SCD-illegal, but I’m not sure the additives included are any better than the tiny amount of dextrose in Morton’s iodized salt, and perhaps may be worse over the long-term. Guest guest
From the Morton Salt website: Why is iodine added to salt? Why is dextrose added to salt? In 1924 Morton became the first company to produce iodized salt for the table in order to reduce the incidence of simple goiter. Dextrose is added to stabilize the iodide. Iodine is vital to the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the prevention of goiter. Actually, the amount of dextrose in salt is so small that it is dietetically insignificant. Morton® Iodized Table Salt contains 0.04 percent dextrose or 40 milligrams per 100 grams of salt. Morton® Plain Table Salt contains neither iodine nor dextrose. All Morton Salt products containing potassium iodide are labeled as such. > > Hey guys, > I've been having a major flare for the last week, and I happened to glance over at my salt (morton table salt) only to find that it has dextrose in it!
