Guest guest
The first you need to do is have your dentist recommend a good Oral Surgeon and a good orghodontist. You may also want to ask your insurance company for a list of doctors in their " network " if you have that type of coverage. I don't know what you mean by " shave " your jaw, but I'm sure the oral surgeon could explain exactly what needs to be done. I am scheduled for lower jaw advancement on August 8. I have also heard horror stories about this surgery, and I think it used to be like that but the techniques have improved over the last several years. I understand that I will be banded, but that's not the same as the old " break your jaw and wire it shut " line that people think of when you mention jaw surgery. As I understand it, I will be able to open enough to consume liquids and speak some. But, I also understand that this is a temporary situation. I'm sure some of those who are post-surgery can give you alot more insight, though. Also, you will likely have to wear braces for a while first, so you'll have some time to research and get used to the idea before the time comes. Go to the Zip-n-squeeze site, too. It has a whole wealth of information, including a detailed explanation of what orthognathic surgery is. Heck, if you knew it was called orthognathic surgery, you're doing better than I was at that stage!! Do your research, consult with your doctors and family, and pray...you'll make the right decision. Keep us posted on your progress. Best of luck. Angel > Hi, > I have been told by many dentists since I was a kid that I needed > surgery to shave my jaw, but my parents could never afford it. Guest guest
Thanks so much. I have so many questions and spend a lot of time researching. > > > > Hi, > > > > I have been told by many dentists since I was a kid that I > > needed > > > > surgery to shave my jaw, but my parents could never afford it. > > Now I > > > > am looking into getting my jaw fixed because the dentist today > > told > > > me > > > > that the way my teeth are sitting, I will continue to lose my > > teeth > > > > because of the way my teeth are carrying the weight. Guest guest
Reni - I'm so glad to hear that you are doing research. I've spent countless hours doing web searches on: Orthognathic Surgery, Mandibular Osteotomy, Lefort Maxillary Osteotomy, Hypotensive Anesthesia, Underbite, Mandibular Hyperplasia (underbite), Bimaxillary Osteotomy, etc. I think it is imperative to find out as much information about the procedures and the conditions as you can. I think my Surgeon (and your's too) is very impressed with the research and the knowledge gained. I'm in the medical profession too, which helps when trying to decipher the medical terminology. Good job, Reni! ~~ Diane > > > > > Hi, > > > > > I have been told by many dentists since I was a kid that I > > > needed > > > > > surgery to shave my jaw, but my parents could never afford > it. > > > Now I > > > > > am looking into getting my jaw fixed because the dentist > today > > > told > > > > me > > > > > that the way my teeth are sitting, I will continue to lose my > > > teeth > > > > > because of the way my teeth are carrying the weight.
