Constantine,

It really depends from doctor to doctor and case by case. Some people

don't wear a splint at all, some wear it only for 5 days others for 2

to 3 weeks and others for 6 to 8 weeks. There is no one consensus on

the splint. I would trust your doctor. I don't think he's going to take

out the splint if it's going to affect you badly. As for food, I have

had my splint on now for ten days and yesterday my doctor gave me the

ok to start eating soft foods such as pasta. In about 30 minutes I am

going to try my first scrambled eggs since the surgery so I'll let you

know how that goes.

I've had upper done not lower so can't answer for the lower jaw part

but I did have rigid fixation.

Best of luck.

Thanks Sara. Enjoy the eggs!

Are you moving up to pasta and eggs with the splint still in or was

it removed today?

I had lower only, and had the splint wired in (but I was not wired

shut, if you catch my distinction there) for seven long weeks. He'd

promised six, but then decided to leave it in one more week. Grrr!

Don't let that worry you, though. Different docs do different things,

and each patient is different, too... What I needed may be very

different from what you need.

Best I remember, I did have a scrambled egg before the splint came out,

but I swear I can't remember at this point...

Trust your surgeon. He (or she) knows what was done in your case, and

how to go about helping you recover best.

7 weeks with your splint!

My God, how on Earth did you survive? I'm barely 5 days wired and

banded with my splint and I'm constantly dizzy and losing weight

fast.

I'd kill for scrambled eggs though...

Constantine,

I still have the splint in and was meant to move to pasta and eggs

today but as you can see from my other posts that didn't work out too

well. Not so much because of the splint but because of the fact I

can't open my mouth very well. Now I have the very little bit of eggs

I managed to get in stuck in my splint and I can't get them out. The

fun never stops!

No doubt I had an easier time of it than you are having. I was

neither wired shut nor banded, and I never had the trouble some do in

opening my mouth. (Clearly both my doc and I had one of those " magic

mornings " -- thank heavens! Plus he's just a danged fine surgeon, and

has done a ton of these procedures.)

I did use a stick blender some sweet friends had given me. I'd put

soup or something similar into a Pyrex measuring cup, add enough

broth or milk to thin it sufficiently, blend away and then pop it

into the microwave. Presto! lunch... And the clean up just involved

putting some hot soapy water into the measuring cup and sticking the

end of the blender in to give that a whir. I became really proficient

by the time it was all over. I also like yogurt -- and ice cream, of

course!

Best,

You do, what you have to do. I've been wired shut with a splint for

6 weeks ... and I have 2 more to go. You don't think you can

survive - until you do. :)
