Guest guest
I don't spend much more than I did before WLS *except* on clothes! I find that I actually LIKE clothes, now, and I do spend lots on them. However, since I'm still losing (although more slowly), I stick to the discount catalogs and drastic sales. I'd be broke if I bought the same amoung of clothes at regular retail! --- 365/199/160 Lap RnY, Distal - Dr. s Vanderbilt University Hospital Surgery date June 3, 2002 ----- Original Message ----- > I wonder if any of you have had this problem...or maybe a blessings...since WLS... > Do you find that you like to buy things and spend money , and just generally treat yourself with stuff....I find I am loving to buy things and shop more than ever....I figure , that I spent so much money before WLS on food , that it's really no difference, and now I'm doing something constructive....I never have really spent much on myself for things, except for food. Good quality, classic clothing at inexpensive prices. I have done alot of work to get myself down to this size and continue to work to maintain my current weight. I feel as though I can treat myself to nice clothing. I no longer spend large amounts of money at fast food windows! Guest guest
Yes, sorta. I found I'd replaced something with shopping. Didn't always have to buy, had to shop, though. It was the high of my week. Of course, when I realized that, I had to stop. It had control over me and I wasn't going down that road! It was hard to stop, too. Like anything else, it isn't like you can NEVER shop again and be ok. Gotta do it. But I wait tl the last minute and have to rush, so there is no high in it. It's a duty and now I an do it. Guest guest
Oh yes Sherry, I can relate to that. But in a not-so-positive way too. To me, I replaced one addiction with another. My addiction was buying make-up (which I wore very little of before surgery) from HSN. I have enough make-up, creams, etc to sink a battle ship and I have had to come to terms with the money I have thrown away in the last year or so on beauty and skin care products. I always end up buying more than I went to Wal-Mart for. One way I do allow myself to " indulge " now and make it okay is to take $10 cash into the dollar store. It's still giving in to my shopping addiction. But I am not wasting as much money. from NJ Spending issues > Hi, I know this is gonna sound silly, but I wonder if any of you have had this problem...or maybe a blessings...since WLS... But I also think the clothes shopping is sometimes a transitional thing and is part of learning and embracing a new style or way of dressing for ourselves. As I was losing, I tried many different ways of dressing and bought things I had never tried to wear before. Even though many of the items I bought then still fit, I don't wear alot of them anymore as they are not the style I ended up embracing. It's like I had to work through the elation of being able to wear " anything " in order to be at the place where I could chose what I wanted to wear because it suited me best. I did spend too much on clothes for a while there. But after I'd sort of calmed down and decided on a style that was right for me, I found that I needed a lot less clothing. I took alot of stuff (big and small!) to resale and was able to rebuild a professional wardrobe with quality used clothing in my own style. The other thing that is new is, of course, having clothes that continue to fit, season after season. I don't need as much now because I have all these clothes from last year and the year before that and the year before that and they ALL FIT! hugs, Ann

YES! Mine is definitely at the problem stage - and I get cranky if I want to go shopping and there's no money (I cannot have credit cards because I just go overboard with them). But after years and years of just lusting after all the cool shoes and neat clothes in all those stores that were " off limits " - I just want to keep getting stuff. I find that shopping at Goodwill frequently has quenched some of that urge - I can get a LOT of stuff for really cheap (especially if I go on 1/2 price days), and I've found some really great things there (my biggest find was a like-new Ralph skirt I got for a whopping $2). As far as replacing meals out and junk food, I think I use that up each month now with my supplements, protein powders and other " specialty " foods and bars each month. I think it's like any other addiction - finding a way to manage it because this one can be just as destructive as any other if it gets out of hand. Just ask my poor checkbook... Guest guest
I'm definitely a shopaholic with clothes, but thankfully my latest passion is consignment clothes shopping so I am spending less money then the regular department stores. This is the first year-this winter- where I will have an entire wardrobe from last year that still fits! I bought so many summer clothes though that I didn't get to wear them enough! Now the big problem is CLOSET SPACE. Guest guest
I suppose that I use the term in comparison to the way I used to be. I used to hate shopping. Now, I love it, and sometimes just feel the need to hit the stores. Thankfully, it's not gone to the extreme of having to mortgage the house or maxing out my credit cards, but it's a new experience for me, and I find that I will shop just to shop, and not because I'm looking for something specific. I do control it, pretty much, but have been known to buy something and return it later because I felt I " settled " for the item and didn't " just love it, " just like the old days when we had to buy whatever fit, as long as we didn't hate it. in NJ ******************************** In a message dated 9/6/2003 7:38:52 AM Eastern Daylight Time, FBayuk writes: > We are using the term a bit loosely here. Guest guest
I've become a shopaholic, too. I waited until after all my plastics for a lot of stuff, but I also find my style changing somewhat. I used to love the Ralph sort-of collegiate, tailored look, and now I find that I'm leaning towards a slightly sexier look, especially now that I can go braless. Buying off the rack is a whole new experience, and way too much fun! in NJ
Guest guest
I shop now....BECAUSE I CAN! LOL - what I mean is I was absolutely unable to physically do shopping. Too much back pain, windedness, fatigue, leg pain, etc. I even used web van (when it was around) for groceries. I mostly shopped online. I hated to stop at the cleaners, drug store, - I never saw the inside of Target, the malls, home depot, etc. Getting in & out of the car was a chore, let alone wealking from the parking lot to the entrance. Now I virtually live in the mall, home depot, target, old navy, macys nordstroms - ANY where -I am always in the grocery store because it facsinates me. Crazy, cause I can only eat a little, my hubby's a vegetarian & works out of town 5 days a week & the kids don't live here. Needless to say - my freezer is always full. Why???!!! - CAUSE I CAN!!! I can physically do it. Yes, I am now a shopaholic - a " natural " by product of wls for me. Not the kind to spend the mortgage, just the kind that spends, spends, spends. <VBG> Lorraine > I suppose that I use the term in comparison to the way I used to be. I used > to hate shopping. Wow - I can relate to that! It's taken me some time to learn to be " choosy " and not just buty the first thing I find. I have to keep reminding myself I have to absolutely LOVE it in order to get it - otherwise I end up with WAY too much stuff I don't want or need.
