Re: Speech issues?

Hi -

I'm not sure how common it is, but my theory is that it could be related to tort

more than the plagio itself. My son was treated with 2 DOCBands between 17 and

24 months. He was a late talker so he qualified for EI and was in ST for a year,

literally 2 years to 3 years old when he graduated and aged out of the program.

His ST was a believer that his delayed speech development was a result of the

low/weak muscle tone he still had (leftover from the tort) in his face and

mouth, which made sense to me, since he had a hard time moving his mouth to make

the proper sounds. We worked on strengthening those muscles and his speech made

huge strides in that year.

I'd be interested to know what kind of articulation issues your son is having.

My son did great in ST but right at the end he started stuttering quite a bit,

totally out of the blue. At first I was really concerned and was looking into

proceeding further with ST through the school district (since he aged out of EI

in North Carolina). But then it started gradually improving so we think (hope)

it was just a phase. He still stutters occasionally, but I can tell in those

moments, it's mostly from excitement and not being able to grasp the right word,

whereas before, it was almost all of the time. I've heard that I don't have to

worry about stuttering until he's later into school age, like 7 or 8. He also

has what I would call articulation " quirks " in the way he talks, (doesn't say

the S sound when in combos of ST, SP, SC, etc. and says BL, instead of BR), but

our ST said he was where he should be for his age, and I've been told by other

moms as well, that it isn't really a problem, again, until it hasn't worked

itself out by school age (5 and up). If it hadn't been for the stuttering issue,

I was told he wouldn't have even qualified for further ST, at least not through

the school system, based solely on his articulation. So I'm just curious if you

were told differently. I honestly have not been concerned with his articulation

at all, in fact, we think it's the cutest thing ever and I have a list of words

he says written down so I can scrapbook about them later. Now I'm slightly

worried that maybe it's something to be concerned about. But I trusted our ST,

so I hope she hasn't led me astray.

issues and qualified for EI at the local school. IS speech issues common with

plagio? Are there things that I should have checked? Any input would be great.
